hi there,
I've not been on here for a while!
I'm building a kit car based on a vw beetle chassis and have fitted a 1.7ie engine from a 33 and converted it twin 40 dellortos!
The problem is i have no idea how the accelerator cable from the alfa connected to the carbs as i bought the engine already removed.
If someone out there could post me a picture on here ore email me at keithalan@btopenworld.com
thank you

Hi there,
I suspect that the standard twin carb linkage may not fit without some minor modification as the 16V injected engines had a slightly different length rod. I have never played with the 8V injected engines.
Do you have the bar that runs accross the top of the engine that connects the two carbs together? This bar then has drop links from it that have ball sockets on each end, these then attach to the carbs.
The accelerator cable then runs through a bracket that is attacked to the pillars that support the cross-rod bearings and the cable attaches to an arm that is fitted to one side of the rod.
I have a sprint at home with no airbox fitted, using K&Ns, this will make photos a lot easier, I will send you some later. I also have a spare twin carb linkage set that may be of use if you do not have it. Shouldn't be expensive...
Regards

Hi there, I have the set up to control the carbs and it is as you say it is a cross shaft.
The bit that I need to know about is how the cable actually attaches to the linkage, as I have it mounted to a beetle gearbox on beetle accelerator cable.
I would appreciate a close up of this part if you could do it I would be grateful.

The cable is the dangly bit in your pic. You seem to be missing the rod end type fitting that threads on and the part of the rocker arm that is attached to the cross shaft and normally has a pin where this rod end fits appears to have the pin missing and be bent over.

Hi,
I totally agree with Eddie, looks like the crossbar has been modified for some obscure reason.
I may well have a cable end in the workshop, I certainly have at least one crossbar complete assembly. I will look and see if the cable end that attaches to the bar comes apart at all for you also.
The camera is an Olympus E10 that I have had for some time, I use it at work for marketing shots also... Does take a really good picture:-)

Looking at it closer, it appears to have the arm that cable end fits on removed. It should be about where that lump is in the middle of the boss.

The cable end doesn't come apart as such. The 'rod end' fitting is seperate to the cable end in as much as the cable end screws completely out, the cable is permanently crimped into the threaded section.
It must be possible to rig something safe up to connect a beetle cable to the alfa shaft.
Eddie is right again, this end of the shaft is missing the part that the rod end fits to, what is going on at the other end? Mine has similar fittings at both ends, these cars were available as right and left had drive... You may be able to rig up to that end.
Measure your shaft length as I may have a spare.
