Fuel level gauge

Hi all,

I have a alfa 33 1.7 16v from 1993.

The fuel level gauge does not come above 1/4 of full scale. I think the sensor is broken, but I don;t know for sure. Maybe it is the gauge itself. Does anyone have any experience with this and what did you do.

Could be that the float inside the tank has lost buoyancy? If one or the other of the air containers on it has a leak and fills with petrol then I'm sure it wouldn't float well.
