Could some kind soul do me a pic of the brace from firewall to chassis as used I believe on the series3. In fact a pick of each end would be great.

Haha, have you found some cracks?
I went to an Alfa club evening at Stock & Co (suspension parts warehouse) recently (when are you joining, Eddie?) and people were talking about polyurethane suspension bushes.. Apparently if you put them in the back of your 33 you can expect the tie rod linky thingies to crack at the welds just by the bush. What good, sturdy, reliable cars eh? |

Hi Ben, no I'm working on the principle of a pinch of prevention being better than a pound of cure. I suspect that some of the reasons for failures are not always the obvious ones ie tired front shocks would make pothole impacts much more severe. Having said that the engine bay is clearly not stiff enough or strong enough for optimum performance and I thought I'd apply some of my rally building experience to the problem. If the factory has solved some of the problems then I might as well start there.
This business of the urethane has me puzzled as it doesn't stack up to me. For a start there is a whole range of stiffness available in urethane from quite soft to really hard. Alot of rally machinery runs with metal rod end location and survive under much more severe shocks than a road going 33. Our oldest 33 has some urethane in the rear and I've not seen any signs of problems. The one areaI 'd be quite wary of it is in the very front bush of the front suspension as this has a twisting load on it with movement.

Probably most people who replace suspension bushes in a 33 are gonna take the car racing, so they put in a hard grade and give the suspension a fair workout.
On carsfromitaly.com there's a picture of a rally Alfa 33 so it must be possible with enough reinforcing. |
