Think I've got to change the oil pump in my P4. Looked in the manual and don't understand the stuff to do with distributor angles. Surely you just put the new pump in the way the old one came out? Although I have noticed that there is a small cylinder of metal at the top which isn't totally symmetrical. If anyone has any information that would be useful to know beforehand please let me know. Not looking forward to the possibility of doing something wrong and mucking up my engine. Thanks.

Do your best to change the oil pump without disturbing anything else. Once you get it back together check that the rotor arm is pointing to number one spark plug lead when the engine is at top dead centre (TDC).
You can check the TDC position by looking for the "T" mark on the flywheel or by removing number 1 spark plug and sticking a screw driver up the hole and cranking the engine round BY HAND until you feel the pistion at the top of it's travel. Once you have established TDC you can rotate the distributor to ensure that the rotor is pointing to number 1 lead. Hopefully it wont be far away.
Good luck!
