I am tidying up my Alfa , trying to make it look like it's a car rather than a rust bucket with occasional metalwork (slight exaggeration but you need to see it to understand what I mean) and it also occurred to me that the front & rear sbumpers need repainting.
Being a person who listens a lot to learn a few, usually, unusable but vital pieces of information , I was wondering exactly how one goes about removing the rest of the paint on the bumpers and then bringing them back to the original colour. I reckon its about the only place that rust hasn't set in but they are so patchy that it would be a shame to fix the rest and not fix them too! _________________ A Brit in Athens since '87

Hi,
I'm not too sure of the way of removing the second-hand paint from my own either, so that makes two of us in the same boat, eh?
I did spot a spray pack of specialised plastic bumper paint remover in my local auto. paint shop last weekend and not too sure whether it would work in a satisfactory way or would it go nuts? The last time I tried to remove paint from plastic was from two painted mirrors, admittedly a different plastic (hard polycarbonate not semi-pliable polyethelene), they had to go in the bin after a going over with paint stripper melted the mirrors themselves but only made the paint go 'gooey'! Predictably, I'm reluctant to repeat that with the only two Alfasud bumpers in my posession.
This can of paint remover stuff in the shop was a fairly well known brand like 3M or the like, said it works on paint but not plastic. What is paint made from? Acrylic lacquer or enamel was a form of plastic I thought. Whatever, as mentioned earlier, I'm more careful these days.
My bumpers have about two layers of crappy paint on them and the (supposed to be) black plastic underneath is a mottled grey sort of mucky colour, I reckon most would go that way too. It would need repainting again but obviously needs a decent base to build on.
Anyone tried this paint remover stuff in a can (around AUS $35-38 or so!!) or does anyone have another method such as light bead blasting or somthing?
Cheers,... Col. _________________ 1977 Alfasud ti 1.7

Hi...
When i repainted my front bumper, i didnt removed all the existing paint.
I used sand paper, and then filler to smoth the painting area. I dont remember exactly what filler i used, but still remember that is specific for plastics...
After that painting was all that was needed...
Worked for me, and still looks good.
