I have a 33 Ti that developed a small ignition misfire when under light load. I thought maybe a plug or lead going so changed all leads and plugs.
Now the bugger will not run at all, just backfires through the carbs. This tells me that the leads could be in the wrong sequence, checked this and it's ok.
When cranking the engine over I notice that the speedo goes up to about 30 - 40 kph? Strange, and the tacho is at about 1500rpm.
This is obviously an electrical fault.
Does anyone have a clue what is the cause of the fault or suggestions.

You own an Alfa 33 - you're describing character. 
On my spare car I've tried to start it with a dead battery, and the speedo has just kept reading higher and higher and the odometer begins to rack up the kms while the motor isn't even turning over. There's not necessarily anything out of the ordinary there.
Perhaps you've done something to the lead from the ignition coil to the distributor, perhaps it's the distributor cap or rotor which needs replacement, or there may be other bad connections you've disturbed.
Are you really sure you have the firing order right?
You didn't let moisture get anywhere while you were doing the job?
Have you tried testing for a spark? |

Speedo does this when your battery is flat. As to the carb-backfiring, I have a similar problem on one of my TIs while my other never does it. I would also like to know what causes it. Could be just damp somewhere? Just got the carbs tuned aswell, so I'm at a loss.

Hi... 
Backfire trough the carbs, generally means that your car ignition order is wrong, or even the timing...
Are you really sure that when you changed the leads, you connected all correctly???
Check first your ignition order, remebering that cylinder nē1 is on the right hand side, front one. (drivers side if you are in the UK)
Something like this:
2 - 1
4 - 3
If everything is ok, then your timing can be out...

Yup, and maybe even cam timing. Which was what I faced and rectified after adjusting cam.

Bella, I'm sure the leads are the correct way around.
Serpent, it seems unlikely that the cam timing has changed as nothing mechanical has been altered..
Ben, yeah, I'm going to check all other connections....ho hum. I'm am sort of used to these "character" idiosynchrocies as my other vehicle is a 1982 Ducati 900.
Hey Ben, good to see another kiwi enthusiast. You mention in one of your posts a Haynes manual. Is this for the 33 specifically? Have you heard about the guy in Te Awamutu who specialises in Fiats and Alfas. His phone number is 0800 fiatalfa. I think he has some second and new parts.

Nobody can tell you're a Kiwi enthusiast unless you fill in your profile, especially with a name like Dr Goon! 
The Haynes manual which applies is actually for the Alfasud, but most copies you'll find also have a supplement at the back covering the later Sprint models (i.e. 33 running gear, twin carb engines). You should be able to pick up a copy on Trademe.
If the guy in Te Awamutu advertises in the AROC newsletter I've probably seen his ad, but there are enough specialists in Auckland that I don't need to go to Te Awamutu.. |

Check that you have your distributor cap on the correct way...it should only be possible to fit one way but I once got mine clipped on wrongly making the timing 180deg out
