Hi,
My fuel pump has started to whine (more than the missus!) and now my car just sounds like a wasp going along Is it possible to overhaul the pump? Any insight appreciated as i'm going to tackle this at the weekend if it ever stops chuffing raining |

Hi,
Fuel pumps cannot be overhauled ... This whining noise is caused by worn rollers and blades that revolve and suck fuel.
There is way to open the pump but there is nothing you can do about it.
Blocked fuel filter is a reason to make the pump go nuts and scream. Try to replace it and see if the noise is less. Otherwise buying a new one is the only way to cure it.
And don't use a second-hand one... did it from a wreck 33 and the first 3 days worked well ... afterwards I was ashamed to go round with the car.
Bought a new one for 140€ and now I can't hear it working even putting my ear behind the fender

Yes, change the fuel filter first and see if that helps. It's behind the passengers side front wheel arch. you'll see it from under the car. Quite often it has a protective rubber sheath around it. When changing it - take note of the direction of fuel travel, which I believe is printed on it as an arrow.
Good luck!

Hi,
fuel pump whine is often due to clogged fuel circuit.
this can happen because of :
- dirt or rust in the tank (rust is very common on 33s) clogging sock filter in the tank
- dirt or rust having flown through previous filter and clogging fuel pump internal filter (inlet side in the pump)
- dirt or rust clogging the main fuel filter
- restricted (pitched, bent,...) fuel line, most of the time under the car
- faulty pressure regulator
any faults on the fuel circuit must be identified and repaired before you even think of replacing the fuel pump. if the tank is full of rust, your brand new expensive pump is likely to start whining again within a few days.
with best regards,
