Sorry to ask this as I'm sure it's been raised many times in the past but the orange 4 x 4 light on my dash is on. Can anybody lead me through a list of places to look. The facts are
1) Light is always on
2) Get two clicks from the actuator thingy when ignition is switched on (which I gues is engagement then disengagement)
3) No clicks if ignition switched on with brake pedal pressed.
4) With the ignition switched on I'm sure I can hear a noise like that made by a radio when a mobile phone is about to go off, but at very low volume.
I assume that the fact I can hear the engement clicks means relays, fuses etc. must be sound.
Did I read correctly that the orange 4 x 4 light has two bulbs, and they both have to be working?
Thanks _________________ 16v p4 In pieces. |

Yes you have read it but they are in series so if only one burns, there will be not light at all.
Check that both switches on brake pedal work and click at same time.
Interference your radio is picking up is probably from EMC.
Relay can foul and work like that but I also don't think it is.
You should check "tooth mesh sensor" it is coil/mic that pickups noise from ECM on back of gearbox under propshaft. Connector is behind ashtray/shelve. It has 2 wires in black shield
It could be also ECM or some of it's wires damaged, its wires are in red coating, examine it from connector to gearbox. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

I've found that when the car is first started in the morning, the light is off and 4WD is working. After about 5 minutes driving the light comes on and I'm back o 2WD. _________________ 16v p4 In pieces. |

I would closely inspect both brake light switches. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

There are two plastic buttons behind the brake pedal. One lights your brake lights and the other disengages the 4wd system. Make sure this is not sticking in the depressed position as if the brake pedal was still pushed against it. Otherwise could be a loose wire somewhere or even a problem with the second 4WD ECU in the back of the car. I probably have a spare somewhere at a cheap price if you run out of all other possibilities. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV
