Hi,

I ordered some new brake pads for the 33. "Oh dear", I said (sustitute with valid expletive) when removing the old ones. The profile and shape is completely different!

But the new ones still fit the calipers (very well)! I know there are several diffrerent calipers used on the 33.

What's going on - I obviously had the incorrect pads before or now - but how do I tell which ones!?!?!?!?

Thanks!

Bob

Hi...

I assume you are talking about front pads...
There are 3 different pads.
There´s the most known types- ATE calipers (they use a rectangular pad, with 2 "holes" on the back, to lock the pad in the caliper)
-Bendix calipers (they use a semi circular pad - like a banana - that have the "holes" in the top & bottom of the pad...
-there are another type of calipers that was only ever fitted to series 3 cars (i cant recall the brand). This type of calipers, uses a very similar pad to Bendix callipers, but has a spring at the middle of the pad.

Hope this helps

Neither pad has a connection to the piston - they just sit in there. Both have springs on the top - but are definately different forms!

Hi,

My series 3 33 has the bendix-girling type of calipers. I use ATE brake pads shown below.

Regards

Hi

Vented or solid disks?

On the solid disks there was also Lucas calipers fitted to the 1.3 versions. Similar to the Bendix pads in shape.

There seem to be loads of different pads used in various 33s over the years.

Might be worth checking the Mintex Site which has an online catalogue with images of the different pads. Quick browse shows that there are 6 different types of pads used on the 33, 3 Ate, 2 Bendix and 1 Lucas.

There is also some seemingly random use of calipers. My better halfs 155 TS has the front calipers from a 155 diesel for some reason (and as the diesel was not sold here it is almost certain they are the original calipers fitted at the factory).

All the best

Keith

Keith,

Sounds crazy to me.... I now have the exact ones it says to use on the Mintex site, but they are certainly not the ones I had before.

They still fit perfectly - and braking is no worse than normal!
