37.24 MPG 358.6 miles per tank
1993 k reg 16v wit no cat, no lambda set up for 95 ron

Can anyone beat that?

Whats needed.
1. an alfa 33, state make and model. (cat / no cat, lambda / no lambda)
2. a spare can, with petrol Wink

3. a full tank of petrol, to the brim.
4. a workng trip counter.

Rules
Fill petrol tank up to the brim, along with your spare can. Reset the trip counter and drive as ecomimically as you can (thats the hard part) until you run out of petrol and cant go any further. Take out spare can, and pour into petrol tank. Note down your mileage and work out the average MPG. Use the following link if you want.

however ive been doing this for ages and not had a problem

My wheels are to big and currently my speedo is 5mph faster than im actually going. I do an average of 60mph and do about 30 miles per trip.

I used to get about 300 - 320 miles per tank, the car was incorreclty set up for 97 ron fuel with no lambda, then i set it up correctly, 95 ron, no lambda no cat and got a little more Wink

I did manage to get 390 miles when driving to alfa day, i could have got more if it werent for a long blast with another car for the last 30 miles Embarassed

Hi,

two years ago my credit card froze and i had to go home on very little cash.
that night i ran 1134 kms until i decided to fill er up (49 liters) on my alfa 33 1.3ie (cat has been removed), 1992 ; the car had by then between 350 000 and 400 000 kms on the clock (has now 520 000).
i achieved the performance on the motorway, with overinflated (2.6 bar) stock tires, 5th gear all the way, driving in the slow lane, behind trucks (80kms/h average).
on the other side, when the tank was so rusty it was leaking like hell, i would barely run 200kms on a full tank...

You don't have to run your car out of petrol to measure its economy. The mpg figure is a sufficient comparison, not miles per tank.
So you fill your tank up, zero the trip counter, drive until the tank's near empty, pull in to a petrol station and note the trip counter reading and how much petrol it takes to fill your tank back up. You can calculate how many miles per gallon your 33 does from that.

The best I've got out of my 1.7QV (carburetted 8v, no cats or lambda probes or that eco-friendly rubbish) is about 7.5l/100km, or 38mpg. 604km (375 miles) is the most I've seen on my trip counter before I've chickened out and filled up.
Normally I average 9l/100km (31.4mpg).
I'm using Imperial/European gallons here not US ones.

(should be 95) Doh, when i fitted my cat, i earthed the corect connectors for lambda probe, but forgot to unearth the other connecter so the car thinks its been running 91 ron.
I will remove the connector and try again.

Come on guys and girls anymore, or is no one driving their car in this lovely weather.

Just got a 36mpg tank, 98 RON on 97 setting. Changed back to 95 now so will see what that does.

My 33 16v '93 with cat - standard except K+N panel.

It's running well, with a very low CO and HC with a recent bosch lambda, and genuine good cond exhaust and cat, BUT driven as it should be- MPG about 15-20!!!! Razz

John W, your kinda missing the point here, anyone can get a bad MPG, thats easy Laughing

whats HARD is driving economically Wink

especially in this weather. To make it easier, fill up do 1 long run, driving economically, fill up again, work out MPG, then drive normally again (like a nutter Laughing

I did 43 MPG with a 1.7 16V engine, 2 pearsons and a fully loaded trunk. No CAT, but standalone fuel management with lambda correction. It was all mostly open road, and maybe 15% city driving.

I've made 500 km, and used 37 liters of fuel. When I've translated km into miles, I've used miles=km/1.4.

I'm about to do a long run, i will do a test with car setup for 95 ron with cat on the way there. On the way back ill set the car up for no cat 97 ron and disconnect the lambda probe.

Average 8l/100km which is about 35mpg.

It will do more over a long trip. 40mpg give or take.

Car Alfa 33i.e 90bhp. 1994 93,000km.

Right, you ready for this?

82 mile trip there not exceeding 60 mph 3k rpm, using shel v-power.
With the ecu setup for 95 ron with cat and lambda probe connected i got 45.98 mpg.

82 mile trip back not exceeding 60 mph 3k rpm, using shel v-power.
With the ecu setup for 97 ron with no cat and lambda probe disconnected i got 48.83 mpg

Checked tyre pressure was the same before leaving on both trips
This wasnt a long run i know or was it the same journey but the return trip, although it was the same distance, its a difference of 2.85 mpg and im sure would be greater over a longer distance.
Howver as i was visiting my god parents, im sure i weighed mor on the return trip, as i was full with good food and had 3 large protions of cake with me Laughing

Your 2mpg difference might be within the margin of error, but one thing that's not in doubt is that I couldn't have achieved that economy with my carbed 33(s)! Confused

I think using v-power and setting it up for 97 ron "advancing the timing" has made a huge difference compared to.

my best in my old 33 ie coming back from wales was 46.2mpg, that was a proper brim to brim test and cruising at over the national speed limit pretty much all the way back to birmingham. wonderful economy is there to be had from the 1500cc injection!

Averaging 28-30 MPG

'92 1350cc twin carb. Best I ever had out of it was 35 on a long run but I was quite bored by the end of it Laughing

Around 33 mpg doing 340 miles on a full tank, using 98RON in a 94' 1.5IE 33 with a Catalyst.

A quick question: do I have to set the ECU in my car to run on 98RON or is it already set?

depending on what injection system you have, i only know about the motronics ML4.1 where you change the timing relay to tell the ecu you have 1 - 4 options.
