Crying or Very sad
Does anybody know where I can get hold of the rubber mounts that hold the visco cupling in place on a P4? I would appreciate any help or advice on this subject.

Don't want to burst your bubble but they aren't manufacutered for last 4 years and are almost imposible to get new.
Every P4 owner on world would like to have those 2 mounts in his first aid kit.

i hear you can get the one but not the other.the one with 2 blocks on is the one that is hard to get(impossible) but i think you could modify the original one to work by cutting of the blocks and drilling a hole where the blocks were and findind some similar looking blocks off another car, i have seen very similar rubber mounts on something else but i cant remember what.the blocks i have seen are basically a cube with 2 threads coming out of opposite ends.if you get it work buy loads of those rubber blocks!!!!!!!!

Could somebody please explain which part that is exactly, or better yet post a picture? I just bought a P4, and got the drive parts stripped as seen on the picture below, so I would like to know what is missing.

Thanx!

one of them is the rubber joint on the top right of your photo and the other one goes on the other side of the viscous coupling -its a round rubber with a bar on it with 2 square rubber joints on either side that bolt to the floor.

Thanx Stedee!

The one on the picture is brand new, and when I talked to the previous owner of the car he told me about the other one I will have to buy, and he also said something about fitting something off a 75.

the one i have described is very very hard to get, you can either get a knackered one and do as i have said earlier in this post or if you can get one off a 75 - i didnt think the 75s were the same because they are only rear wheel drive
subaru and alfa designed the 4 wheel drive system together, there is a chance that old subarus might share parts of the drive system
good luck on getting one
if you sort something out tell me because i would like to know what you did because it is a problem with p4s

Where did you get this information???
I read on several articles, that the 4wd system, used by Alfa, was designed by Austriacs Steir-Puch.
The switchble system was also designed by them, and is much the same as used in the Fiat Panda.
The permanent system, was an improvement of this type of transmission, with the inclusion of the electromagnetic coupling.

The only relation that Alfa had with Japanese manufactures, was the A.R.N.A. - And what a pile of junk, it was.
With Subaru?? They only, share the engine basic layout. But nothing is interchangeble.

All the best

i had heard the owners of subaru (maybe fuji) collaborated with fiat in the design of the boxer engine and the drive train
it made sense to me because basically the subaru engine is a a copy of the alfa boxer engine

also i thought maybe an old subaru justy or legacy might have a similar drivetrain because the japanese dont come up with ideas themselves, they just borrow other peoples designs and sometimes make them better

Well, i believe, that is another mistake. Alfa Romeo (not Fiat) developed the boxer engine to fit it in a small car. It hired Rudolf Hruska (possibly, the name is badly written), an ex-engineer from Porsche, that while still in Porsche was dennied to develop the flat6 into Water Cooling. So he went searching for a company that would finance his idea.

The Alfasud, was born...
Subaru had nothing to do with this. Possibly, if it werent , the rally sucesses from Subaru, nobody, probably had ever heard from them...
Subaru`s are good "house appliences", and possibly were copying Alfa Romeo and the flat engine concept...
But that was all they could do... Copy.

But i also give them credit. They managed to evolve the "boxer concept", something that Fiat was not brave enough to do.
Who can say??? After the sucesses from Lancia in Rally championships, perhaps we could had a Boxer engined Alfa Romeo fighting for top places in WRC...

All the best

DriverX part you re miisng and is most problematic to get hold of is part number 2. (1st picture in 3post from top (bobbers))
http://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2583&highlight=

One on picture is 2nd visco coupling mount, and new ones do not manufacture but can be found in AR shops on some shelf, because same part was used on all 33 4x4 (not only P4) and as you have writen Alfa 75 used it.

1st mount was used only on P4 and has terible design making it very hard to replace with similar or making new one.

On yours picture I can see that 1st propshaft touched many times gearlever mount. (shiny ring scares in iron mid of prop shaft) There are
numerous resons for that-
- failed gearbox lower mount
- failed 1st propshaft mount
- failed cross joints on prop shaft (thre is one on each end of it)
- something loose

Before putting it all back (if you manage to buy at least used 1st visco mount ) make sure all cross joints are ok take prop shaft in hand and with other hand rotate joint in all directions it can move. Joint should be able to move using same force, if you need more force to move it into on some spots (or you feel blocking) that means one or more cylindic bearings failed.
Failed bearing will lead to shudder/bumping....premature failure or all mounts including welded spots.

I remember reading the same thing somewhere (about subaru) but it was the cruder 4x4 system used on the earlier (series 2?) 4x4 estate. I don't know if the p4 is simply a refinement of this or a new system altogether, but I do think that there is was link with subaru.
