Ok, I need some advice here. It has been suggested to buy original Alfa Romeo HT leads, as they are made from copper and therefore last a lot longer (maybe longer than the car). I plan on keeping the car as long as it lasts. I have had silicone and carbon HT leads before and they do degrade about 1-2 years after installation. I am after longevity and therefore saving money on replacement, I would like to make my car a little quicker and have the following. K&N cone filter and I have adjusted the AFM by using the 5 min mod (loosening off the spring). I will be fitting a sports stainless steel cat and fitting a CSC crossover manifold. I want to keep the car emission legal (I am a green person).
Would you peeps recommend copper leads? If not why and what would you suggest
I have looked into Beru but they are more expensive than Alfa are quoting and will take 4 weeks to get over here. I have tried Alfa shop, no joy. I can’t find Brecav distributor in English. Someone has suggested Magnacore (KV85) and another company will make some copper HT leads for me and say that they will be as original. NGK have aslo been suggested
All comments welcome, want to get some ASAP as car is running crap and wasting fuel, I can see arching from HT Leads so know they need replacing.
Thanks in advance. _________________ x2 33 16v

Copper leads are noisier. That is why they used silicone leads for noise suppression.
I have a set of the KV85's on my 16V. They work. The distributor here for Magnecor made them up for me on the spot. So I had them made all the same length, otherwise they will all be slightly different lengths to look like they fit better. _________________ Scott Sander

BigAl,
original AR leads were from coper and had 2 niffty features:
a) spark throats/caps were twice as long as regular ones so there was nice bit of the out of 16v heads for easier grabbing
b) you could unscred wire from spark cap, again for easier taking out caps without tangling into wires.
As Scott sugested they are noisier and they would last longer if one wouldnt touch them and replace sparks, problem is that if you change sparks every 6-12months, they would breake core or outer shield, and you will have spark all over car but not in cyl
Anyway I dont think you can still buy original non silicone spark wires from AR made special for 16v. Last ones I've seen few years back that were from AR were little better grade of silicone wires. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

Hi,
My '93 catted 16v uses BRECAV leads, which came from Alfashop, although that was over 5 years ago.
They have long caps, and fit positively onto NGK platinum plugs and bosch cap and coil.
They have only covered about 8000 miles in that time, but no probs.

Big Al,
Did you solve your ignition lead problem?
I'm looking for a set too for my '94 16v.
I found http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/ who do magnecor leads but they are listed as 1990-1992.
Does anyone know if the leads are different on the later cars?

Leads should be the same for all 16v, only the plugs are different on cat cars- platinum NGKs _________________ If it aint broke, fiddle with it until it is!

Paul C
I eventually bought original leeds from Sidlow alfa 01293 774843, First the Coil / ignition leed £11, then nos 2&4 £25ish, then nos 1&3 £25ish. I wish i ordered the whole lot in one go because it took 3-4 mnths to get on back order.
They have 2 & 4 in stock, because when i ordered 1 & 3 they mistakenly sent 2 & 4 again. Im still waiting for 1&3
"There are 2 types", the older type are green in colour "(do not accept)", the newer are black in colour, ill explain
My ht leads were shot so to keep the cost down i replaced coil lead first (made no difference) then i got the longer of the 2 leeds (2 & 4) and put them on the rear 2 cylinders (as changing the leeds is supposed to be a real pain), therefore leaving the front 2 (easy to get to) left to do. "I relpaced my plugs before i bought the original leeds and left the screw on caps loose, so i could unscrew the caps as i took the old leeds off."
The car flew. nos 1 & 3 came in but were green in colour, i dint want different leeds so i didnt accept them, they reordered them. After several months i was told they came in, so i went to fit them and guess what, they had sent 2 & 4 again. They reordered them again (which im still waiting for) but in the meantime i was asked to try the green type. The green type made the car slow.
A few tips, changing normal leeds are a right pain in the ass, as the rubber is quite short and getting the leverage to push on or pull off the plugs is a pain, especially if the ruber breaks off on the plug. If that happens the easiest thing to do is to remove the strengthening support from the bulk head to the front cross member, giving you more access.
The original leeds are different in design, you have to remove the metal screw on cap that is on the plug (you will have to remove plugs to do this, changing the plugs for proper cat "platinum" tipped ones would be easier and makes a world of difference "if your running a cat") and the original leed then pushes on / over the thread on the plug, as these leeds have a longer hard plastic end, it now is such an easy job. _________________ x2 33 16v
