At my last track day, I removed my twin carb 33's airbox and intake trumpets, redirecting the two disconnected exhaust recirculation / crankcase breather pipes into an oil catch can.

The scrutineers told me to just run the biggest breather from the oil filler tube into the catch can, and disconnect and seal off everything else. This includes the four little vacuum pipes coming from the base of each carb throat and running to the central plastic breather junction thingy. They said the car will run better with those pipes sealed off.

Is this correct? Why, and what do those pipes do?
I thought they must be important balance pipes to make all the carbs work well together or something...

Well...

When i had carbed 33´s, i never had a proper look at them, except to clean the "collector" of oil vapours that sits under the air box...

When this was clogged, the car didnt rev, so freely, and it was difficult to start up when cold.

Now, i have a 16v. I tought, i had get way, from trouble with carb sincronising, and tunning, but i discovered that injection can be a pain...
During some time, the car was very difficult to start up...

What did i discovered... I had 3 of these little pipes disconnected, so the pressure regulator (that on injection cars is actuated by the vaccumm created on the intake manifold) wasn`t supplying enough fuel to sart the car.

After i changed the pipes (and fitted correctly) the car was transformed...

Not only, it started first time, but it reved faster...

This is my experience on injected 33´s... Can`t say for sure, what to expect with a carbed engine...

All the best
