hi
1st off what have you done to the engine, i thought you could get the engine repaired especially if its the topend, did mine myself
secondly they arent that bad to service diy oilchange and filter plus always keep an eye on the cambelts and pulleys
i have heard that someone has put in a impreza engine but i have a feeling this aint gonna be an easy job due to the impreza engine being longer etc plus all the grief of the gearbox, electrics, props and diffs etc etc _________________ brum brum |

You are wrong. The ARNA was based in a Nissan platform. Not the 33...
I also heard that a guy did the conversion with a Subaru WRX engine, but never saw any proof of the car existing, for real.
With the amount of trouble and money that you are ready to waste, you would be better off if you bought a Nissan or a Subaru...
The engine of a Alfa, is part of its charm and soul...
You will end up with a hibrid... Good looks but with a awful engine in it...
All the best

The Arna was built on a Nissan Cherry platform, seriously modded on the front end to take the alfasud running gear. Also sold as a 'Cherry europe' . Apart from the sud motor -crap.
The 33 has a low bonnet line thanks to the flat 4, cant see any inline engine woking. An older flat 4 Subaru engine may be a proposition say from series 2, L- series or pickup, but these will be even older, from the 80s.
Keep it alfa or buy a CRX _________________ If it aint broke, fiddle with it until it is!

Welcome Chris,
The jap motors don't seem to have the wonderful reasonance of a screaming boxer.
Keep an eye on Trademe.co.nz
They have this a motor and gearbox in Dunedin at the moment and others have been on recently.

Alfa's are like Potato Chip's, you just can't seem to stop at one.
You could try and pick up a parts car, most are cheap and come with plenty of bits.
If you get stuck or need advice, this forum has a wealth of knowledge to help get the beast operable again.

The latest engine that will fit will be from a 145 boxer (not twinspark). You could have 1.2 (in some markets?) to 1700 8v or 16v. Made up to about 1996.
Last 33 engines went to 1994 - 1.5, 1.7 and 1.7 16v

Chris, if you're still reading the forum, what part of NZ are you in?
You won't have any trouble finding a 33 engine, but you'll pay twice as much for a 1.7 motor unless you get a deal on a whole car. The racers want the 1.7 engines more than 1.5s you see.
Unfortunately the 1.5 cars had different diameter carburettors and different gearbox ratios than the 1.7s.
There's no other engine that belongs in a 33 apart from an Alfa boxer. They're pretty simple motors and pretty reliable really - it's little things going wrong with the rest of my car that keep me busy!
Find yourself an independent specialist to work on your car (easy in Auckland), join the Alfa club and hang around this forum, and you'll find it's still pretty easy to own a 33. _________________ "Now, all that is left to do ... is wait that something else brokens, to fix up again!" |
