I'm thinking about going to look at a 1991 1.7 16V QV with about 60,000 miles on the clock.

The owner says "when cold, and at idle, or from time to time, it misses a cylinder" His diagnosis is that the valves need grinding.

This seems to me very unusual at this sort of mileage; unless the clearances have been badly set the valves/seats should surely still be good.

I just asked him at what mileage the belts were last changed, but I don't know the interval for the 16V. (I'll do a search)

Any comments, please? I don't want to make a longish trip for nothing.

Hi

Should be hydraulic tappets. Could cause problems if they use too thick an oil (tappets pump up). Although given they are a pig to change I would be more inclined to suspect anceint spark plugs.

Official change interval for the belts was 48000 miles.

All the best

Keith

Could be a head gasket on it's way out in just the right place to not give any other signs it's about to let go. Ask me how i know...

could be many things, could be that its only gone to and from the supermarket for years, and a good blast will sort it.

I would check cambelt tension, then go from there.

I go overkill on 16v belts, ours gets re tightened every 6000, and changed with tensioners every 12000.

other than that, could just be moisture in the dizzy cap, everyone neglects their dizzy cap Rolling Eyes
