Hi,

Anyone had any experience of 16v cutting out, and/or the constant idle valve.

Car has started occasionally cutting out when idling, say at a long red traffic light Mad .

Car starts, runs and idles(about 900 rpm) fine. No signs of anything loose on the coil connections or any obvious air leaks etc.

With the constant idle valve disconnected the idle is raised to about 1100 rpm and the car doesn't cut out.

I have a spare valve which i can try out when i get 10 mins, but anyone got any ideas??

John

Hi John,
Try taking the connector to the AFM off, clean the contacts and replace, or just take it off and put it back on a few times.

Thanks Al'. Tried that today and it didn't cutout on a shortish run at least, so hopefully that's sorted it.

Car back to it's old tricks. It actually cut out at least 6 times during the MOT which was starting to piss off the tester somewhat.

Anyone changed the idle valve to cure this? I've got a spare one, but not sure it'll make any difference?

Any other things to try?

John

Hi John,
sorry to hear that, try the spare one first, do you have another AFM, could be the tracts inside yours are worn or dirty.

John,
As you've got a spare I would try that. Failing that I have cleaned the inside of my valve with WD40 before which seems to help with the idling. The flap on the inside of the valve was shitted up on mine causing it to shut slower I guess. Parrafin would be ok to use aswell.

Just thought of something else. Check the rubber seal on the valve....the big one valve to plenum. I wrapped PTFE tape on mine to give it a good seal.

Tried spare constant idle valve with ptfe tape on the seal made squeaky clean with wd40, and it's still cutting out Sad

I'll try a spare AFM next, but don't think it's that. car idles perfectly and runs fine, then just cuts out on idle as if switching the ignition off, no stammer, no idle fluctuation or anything just dead.

Have you checked connection on the white wire at the ignition coil?
If this becomes loose the engine will cut out Smile

Seems to be sorted Very Happy

Spare AFM that I have had sitting in the garage for about 9 years fitted and a brand new bosch TPS. Car runs much much smoother with this AFM too -should have tried it before Mad

Don't know if the original TPS was faulty or not, it seemed to click, but did feel sloppier than the new one when tested with a little finger.
