Hi everybody, my starter motor needs reconditioning as it will only start when the solenoid is tapped (a 2 man job). I want to do this myself, are there any instructions with pictures anywhere? I couldn't find any on bobbbers site. Do any parts need to be changed? Or is it just a clean that’s needed?
I know about the relay mod but would rather fix the source of the problem.

Hi,

I have repaired the starter motor of my 33 some years ago and it is a quite straightworward job.

All you need to do is to remove the solenoid and give it a good clean since dirt and debris block the bore of the solenoid cylinder.
Meanwhile you can buy a new brush plate for the startes rotor as these wear out over the ages and leave you in the road side with no prior notice.
Most probably the starter is a Bosch unit so be sure to write down the product code stamped on the starter body when you ask for a new brush plate; there are quite a few types of brush plates differing in diameter.

Hi,

starter motor rebuild is straitforward, a few pics can be found here : http://alfaimola.free.fr/technique/electricite/demarreur/index.html

the solenoid can't be opened, but you can clean the contacts inside by spraying WD40 through a little existing hole in the solenoid.
be sure to let the bearings bath in engine oil during at least 1hr before reassembly.

Well that was fun, not!
Mine is BOSH, with the following numbers on it:

On the motor 268 0 001 107 009
On the solenoid 0 331 303 006-506

It is different to the photos on the other site.
Well I stripped it down, cleared the dust from the motor, wiped the magnets clean and the contact points. I applied some grease to the end of motor, gearing for top of motor and solenoid.
All parts seemed to move ok, but more so after greasing, so I don’t think I have done anything much.
I couldn’t figure out how to remove the clutch bearing so I didn’t soak in engine oil.

Weather permitting I will refit tomorrow.


On mine there are 4 contact points, took me a while to figure out how to put it all back together after I took it apart. You need to remove the housing of the motor first and then remove the spindle cover and remove c washer and then be careful as you remove the coil. All but 2 contacts came out under spring load, so I cleaned them all and were all freely moving before fitting back together. To fit back you need to slide the spindle back into the cover but not fit completely together (no c washer). Place the contacts in roughly the correct place and then slide the contact housing over contacts and then slide into recess on the plate that will screw to the cover.

I think I have wasted my time as I don’t think anything I have done has helped, but its been interesting, reminded me of my Scalextric set.

Well after all that, it made no difference, i did clean earthing points on engine block and bulk head. I then disconnected the alarm and BINGNO !!!
So something in my alarm is causing high resistance.
