Hi from Athens,

Recently I managed to blow my 1.7 engine. The Crankshaft plus con rods, links, and related stuff are GONE.

It is impossible to source the parts I need for the rebuild in Greece. I tried the net but the prices are quite high.

A friend of mine has a totalled 1990 33 4X4 1.7 but 8v and offers me the whole engine for FREE.

I tried to find out if the crankshaft or the block is a replacement for my 145, i received so many answers but still confused.

So, can I use the block from the 8v and fit my 16v heads or not?

Are there any special modifications needed?

If anyone did the same before, I' ll be at least gratefull for sharing with me some of his knowledge.

Kind Regards,

Paul

the 8v has lower compression pistons than the 16v - great if you want to fit a turbo or supercharger and also you would have to use the 16v sump because of the oil drains.
also i`m not sure if the 33 has a crank sensor for the electronic ignition

I was recently told that it was difficult to fit 16V heads onto anything other than a 16V block because of a difference in the water galleries Sad . Cant confirm this yet but I have got a variety of blocks and heads I am going to have a look at because I need to know myself. Dont know if anyone else can throw some light on the subject Rolling Eyes

As shown in Technical Specifications of both motors, the displacement and pistons diameter are similars.

If I' m lucky enough, the crankshaft will be also similar.

If so I will use only the crankshaft from the 8v engine.

Thanks a lot for your precious input.

I had a damn good luck at a 1350 block and a 16V block over the weekend. I picked what I thought would be extremes. Apart from bores etc the blocks are interchangeable. The differences are belt tensioner bolts, which would unscrew and a hole for attaching thermostat housing, which could be drilled and tapped.
Face to face dimensions are the same. To me it would appear that the basic casting for the boxer hasnt changed during its manufacturer. All they have done is alter the bore to acheive bigger cc's. I couldnt find any differences on the water jackets.
What I did find is that the head gaskets for the 16V are different. In the top water jacket holes each has a hole. They are different in size and not full size but the 8V gaskets only had one small hole.

Hope this helps RSfruitbat

this last answer, gives me "some" hope, since this one will be the last chance for the car.

I' ll remove the 33 P4 engine next Saturday & keep you informed.

Thanks a lot mates ..................
