What are the best engine and gearbox oils to use? Is Selena really necessary (my local alfa dealership charges £20 per 2 litres)? Has anyone had any problems with certain oils ?
Also after rebuildng an engine (1.7 8v) should a different oil be used during running in?
Thanks, Rich
I've done a search but not found anything definitive. |

Alfa recomends castrol multitrax for the 33.
Castrol Multitrax is particularly preferred for vehicles fitted with
transaxles that combine gearbox and hypoid differentials and for
improved gearshift characteristics in gearboxes where SAE 80W/90 or
90 oils are normally used.

I use AGIP SINT CATALYST 10w-40.It was recomended from ALFA before they move to SELENIA and SHELL(at least in GREECE).
Im very pleased with them,i change them every 8000Km at winter and every 7000Km at summer with new filter ofcoarse(i use the 16v`s wich is a litlle smaller than the original for the 1.4ie).I add aprox 3/4 of a litre from change to change just to keep it at top. |

Hi,
I'm using half of the times CITGO motor oil (10-40W) at a price of 3.5 € per litre and the other time Selenia Red at a price of 8€ per litre (Both fully synthetic) . I replace oil every 5000 kms and every 10000 i replace again oil, filter (air and oil) , and spark plugs.
When replacing the oil it comes out at a brown color. The car has 73000 kms on the clock and the engine runs perfectly.
About transmittion I think TUTELA but I'm not sure since the gearbox oil is replaced by the Alfa garage.

Every 5000km . I also have a 1.4ie (1993) with 220.000km on the clock. I change oil every 15.000km, and I don't think I really do much harm to my little engine. Or IS IT beneficial to do oil changes every 5000km or so?

Hi,
I think that replacing the engine oil is really a cheap procedure that does not cost THAT much and moreover it protects the motor.
In case you are driving in city you are making a tragic mistake. The oil becomes like "water" after so many kms and after so many temperature changes.
Simply do that procedure more often. Are you making a lot kms per month? do you make these 15000 kms in less than a year?

Gritsop,
I do about 30.000km a year. Of these 30.000 at least 15.000km are highway kilometers and less than 1000km are the drives when the engine doesn't fully and throughly warm up (short city trips).
In the beginning I used to change the oil every 10.000km. One day I got my hands on an Alfa 33 Maintenaince Schedule which is supplied with every new car (and my second-hand 33 didn't have one). This booklet prescribes an oil and oil filter change every 20.000km. So I decided to extend my interval with 5000km.
Cheers,
Marcin |
