Hi chaps!
Once again, I turn to the oracle that is the Alfa Pages Forum for technical help! (thanks all for help with them pesky door handles).
My 33 is now baffling (PUNN NOT INTENDED!) all and sundry with an intermittant (more present than not) loud rattling sound. It is like someone holding a metal plate against the exhaust somewhere near the middle box and is quite loud.
Middle box has been swapped, nothing lose or around that could be obvious cause....
Any ideas? |

The mid section isn't coming into contact with the tail of the gearbox at all? _________________ Hugh B

No on both counts unfortunately....
There is a small hole on the front section very close to the engine (a matter of a cm or two from the joint to the head). This has been welded/pasted and matters appear better, but being intermittant, there could be more yet..! |

Got a similar exhaust rattle on our 147. But only over a certain grade of cobbled road (certain frequency).
And I've spotted a minute fleck of rust on the 147's sill!! But it's only minor and it remains a great modern-day hatch.
Hmm, wonder how the Alfa garage would react if I told them about the latter niggle??! |

Hi James,
for that sound
take a look if one of rear disc covers is touching disc, friend of mine had that on his brand new 147 2.0. It is close to disc and sound would appear on certain freq.

Just a quick question about those disc covers: if one is missing is it a bad thing? _________________ Hugh B

It certainly isn’t good.
Unfortunately for me I also drive without both rear discs covers, which are a little fragile on 33 Permanent 4 in my case.
So if you drive 99.9% of time in city on dry roads, Everything is ok, but rain, mud, stone chips aren’t good. I’m planning to make new rear disc covers (because you can’t buy them in ar parts store) from inox, if my P4 ever goes back to road on its own.

"... loud rattling sound. It is like someone holding a metal plate against the exhaust somewhere near the middle box and is quite loud."
Your words (above) exactly describe the noise/rattle I had with my 1.7 IE 8V 1993.
This was discovered to be caused by the welds which pin the "box/heat baffle?" that surrounds the rear part of the front exhaust section - where the left and right branches become one - having broken/rotted away, allowing this box to float around the exhaust pipe itself.
Ideally need someone who's a dab hand at welding to retack it.
My cure was to simply to remove this "box" by cutting it away with tin snips ... (can't afford a complete new front exhaust section)
Cheers

Hi, I have a similar problem on my car (although the exhaust on my Clan Clover only uses the front exhaust pipes out of the cylinder heads). I thought it was a loose baffle but in fact traced it to the 2 pipes banging against each other (with the engine at the back the 2 pipes have to cross over each other to get the back boxes across the rear of the car). When the pipes are cold there is good clearance but when they get warm they expand and movement of the engine along with the exhaust pulses means they bang against each other. So I suggest you have a look at the exhaust run and check there is good clearance between exhaust and body and that any rubber hangers are not soft and allow a lot of movement.

Hi,
I am also suffering from the "rattle problem". I thought it was the metal box where the left and right exhaust pipes come together (as mentioned above). I replaced the complete exhaust line, no, not because of the rattling, but the rear muffler broke off and the catalyst was shot. And the rattling is still here... Recently I found out, that it's probably (99.9%) one of the camshafts. I'll have a look at it in few weeks.
Cheers

Thanks, but even if they have it, price of sending it here in Croatia would be grater then dic covers itself, no to mention custom made ones.
Thanks anyway.
