I need to change the hydraulic tappets on my 1.7 boxer motor........but as the cam cover bolts also appear to be the main head bolts, therefore will I need to change the head gasket too?.....as removing the cam cover seems to mean the head will fall off too, therefore if I release the compression on the head gasket, can it simply be re-used - or will I need new ones?.........your experiences would be appreciated

cheers

You can do the tappets without removing the head. The main head bolts are visable when the cam cover is off and dont need to be messed with to tackle this job. I would however recommend putting new camshaft seals on and if perished, new cam cover seals as you'll probably have oil leaks from these after disturbing them.

Hi,

On 16V engine it is possible to replace tappets with the engine in place.
On 8V engine it is impossible because the six 17mm head bolts also hold the cam cover (there are also four 13mm bolts fastening the cover to the head). And the head bolts have to come off, and you cannot remove them without removing the head since they are very long and the inner wing prevents them from being removed.
So, on the 8V engine a tappet job requires head removal. Great occasion to do some valve lapping and replace camshaft seals at the same time!

regards,
zp

Hi, i'm currently rebuiling my 16 valve and need some new tappets. I got a full set for my XR2 a few years back for 40 quid. Just priced them up for the alfa, 13.50 pounds each plus vat Shocked Anybody know of a cheaper supplier of new tappets in the uk?

Hi, they are specific ton Alfa/Lancia but can be sourced from other engines at a scrapyard ; here's the list of cars that use identical tappets.
not : 8V tappets can be sourced from other makes/brands.

zp

Hi,

I`m about to do the same thing (changing tappets and valve cover gaskets). Just don`t know the correct procedure to re-assemble the heads, would be great if someone could help me with the tightening order and the torque of the head bolts !

Regards,

Tobias

This diagram came in the gasket set.

I slacken them, gradually, in the reverse order.

Image posting isn't working right now. Try copy and paste URL

Edit: Tightening:

The leaflet with the gasket set (Bought in France, for Imola) says:

3Kpm, 6Kpm, 9Kpm, -90º+9Kpm, <>, -90º+9Kpm
(I suppose <> means loosen and tighten a bit?)
Retightening: 1000Km -90º+9Kpm

The Alfa 33 Manual says:

Camshaft carrier bolts: 1.9 - 2.4 Kgm

Head bolts: 8.3 - 8.9 Kgm, Warm up engine until fan cuts in, then unloose (sic), lubricate, and retighten to same torque.

Using the numbers on the diagram with the gasket set, the sequence in the Alfa 33 Manual is 2, 1, 4, 3, 6, 5, which amounts to more or less the same thing.
