I was testing out my new dials and hit the rev limiter, the car died and RPM read nothing, the car stalled and would not start again.
I turned it over and could smell fuel, so i guessed no spark, i checked the connection for the CAS, still didn’t start. I checked the connections to the coil and it started.
Later car was cutting out and RPM read 0, it was popping, so i pulled over for another check.
I found out that my temporary coil, which is suspended with wire, as i couldn’t get the other one out due to captive nut spinning inside the wing, was causing the RPM connection to short out on the cross member brace to bulk head.
Moral of story, i must stop procrastinating and do my coil and gear knob

Well i got around to securing my coil today, what a PITA, why does a 5 minute job take 30 mins.
I jacked up the car, using someone else's jack and the car slipped off the jack, i have never experienced that, i guess the jack didn't roll as the car was lifted, luckily it slipped forward and the car rested on the bottom of the radiator panel.
Once i removed the plastic wheel arch lining, i couldn't get the mole grips around the captive nut, so i thought i would remove the recirculation/carbon canister thingy.
One of the studs for it snapped, DOH!
Then one of the bolts holding the coil snapped, DOH!
I didn't have any spare captive nuts on me as i thought the shop i was at might, so i just put in one for the time being, I will probably forget as time goes on. Luckily the stud that snapped had enough thread left for a nut and washer.
Whilst doing this i noticed a lot of corrosion on the connectors for the recirculation/carbon canister thingy and thought, I'll clean the contacts, thinking it might be the reason why the scantool diagnostics was unable to purge the recirculation/carbon canister thingy. I decided to clean the contacts in the engine bay and ended up braking one of the wires, DOH! I repaired that and think i connected the wires up to the recirculation/carbon canister thingy correctly.

Does any one know if the wires to the recirculation/carbon canister thingy are connected with the blue wire closest to the body work?

Hi

No idea about the carbon cannister.

However I have a feeling that if you need the captive nut then you might find them sold in Maplins for rack mounted electronics.

good tip Keith, no worries, i have loads at home but not at the shop, doh!

Am i right in calling it the carbon canister?
What is the thing in the boot?
Anyone else know the correct way to wire it up?

Hi al, not that I own a series 3 but is the carbon canister thingy your on about a swirl pot to remove air bubbles for the fuel injection engines?.

No, It takes the fuel vapours and magically puts them back into the tank, not sure how, there is something in the boot too.

I think that this canister is to minimize fumes from entering the cabine of the car. I remember that also IE Sprint had the same on the back of the rear seats in the trung...

I had my car connected to a snapon scantools diagnostics and it was able to do a purge, i guess cleaning those contacts helped, but i dont know if it was sucking or blowing.
