I'm planning a 'stat change at the weekend in the hope of improving poor running as the car never gets above an indicated 70.

Chatting to the chap at the motor factors he suggested checking the "engine temperature sensor".

Is this the same as the coolant temperature sensor fitted to one of the throttle bodies or is there another sensor somewhere?

There's a sensor on the back of the head of the 16v (right hand looking from front) which I believe is engine temp sensor. Engine coolant sensors are on the throttle bodies which i guess do the temp gauge as the one on the rad switches the fan.

The sensor on the head is a little square affair bolted on with a 10mm bolt.

Thanks for that.

Anyone ever had one of these go and throw the mixture out?

Funny you should say that!

Mine runs a bit lumpy from cold and then picks up after only a few mins of driving. I'm going to swap coolant sensors soon to see if that helps. As for the engine temp sensor I'm not entirely sure how this works with the ECU to adjust mixture if indeed it does at all.

Cue someone with a bit more knowledge on the matter..........

The CTS, the one on the right throttle body as you face the engine will adjust the fueling, acting as a choke, when the engine is cold. Since changing my stuck open thermostat, where the engine rarely got above 60 i was getting 24-27 mpg i am now back up to the high 35's.
Before changing the CTS, which you might not need do as it is doing what it is supposed to because your engine didn't get hot enough to turn off the choke. I would check what output it is giving by using a DMM and check the resistance when cold and hot, i used a new one for comparison but you could use a thermometer. Please look at this thread to see what temp gives what reading.
