AGH.... what is the trick for removing the radiator?

Every time I do it I seem to remove half the car to get it out... surely someone knows a better way?!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Somehow or other I have managed to seperate the fan from the radiator and move it somehow out of the way sideways for the radiator to come out, but it took a hell of a lot of mucking about and suddenly came out without me understanding exactly how.

Last time I undid the alternator and power steering pump and removed the bonnet.

Other times I think I've taken off the front bumper (or usually in the past, it's been off already!). What a nightmare!

Bobbber- definitely take off the bonnet, and leave the fan on the rad if enough clearance- 1 min job with an asistant- not heavy even the wife didn't moan that much!

If the bumper is off the bonnet can stay on and it lifts off the front dead easy.

Be thankful that you're not taking the radiator out of a 155. Apparently it's a lot worse! I guess the more modern a car the more difficult the maintenance. Rad removal on a series two 33 is dead simple.

Apparantly Audi TTs are an absolute MOFO to do anything on- another good reason not to drive a 'cock car'.

hi, on the series 3 the easiest way is :
- remove the fan (two upper bolts+one connector)
- remove the front grille (one screw)
- slacken radiator upper bolt and remove hoses and clamps
- close the bonnet (yes) and get radiator out through the opening of the grille
quite quick, efficient, and can be achieved alone.
regards,
zp

I've really struggled with the bonnet on myself Question Embarassed Confused .

Probably worth putting strips of tape along the bonnet edge then to avoid scraping the paint off.

You are right John. It's easier with the bonnet off as the rad does need a bit of wiggling past the bonnet edge (good tip on the tape on the bonnet edge Wink ) but without help getting the bonnet off when working on your own this has been my prefered method.

Mine is a valeo (orig equipment?) and i really think i'd have had to bend it to get it out the grille hole.

As I'm totally knackered, I'm going to try having more than 4 hours sleep tonight - thus not trying the removal.

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Hi, yes it's a 8v but it's the same on the 16v model, only you'll have to fiddle a bit more for removing the fan if you have power steering and air conditioner installed.
And on the pics cam covers that can be seen on the foreground are not to be fitted on the car - the engine inside already has its own.

Ok folks... Yes it does come out of the front grille.

I won't tell you why it didn't before as it would make me look a dick. Suffice to say I did something stoopid. Laughing

Thanks all...

It wasn't the little hose to the expansion tank holding it back was it?

I'm still adamant (stand and deliver!) that mine wouldn't come out the front hole- maybe it's just me, perhaps that's why i jacked in mechanics Embarassed

It definitely took a lot of jiggling about to get my radiator out, John.
