On normal roads 80 degrees, motorway 100. Why is this? Dodgey water pump?

Hi,

Take it you didn't go to Stanford hall as well then?

My thoughts would be that if the pump is turning at correct speed, i.e belt not slipping then that shoukld be ok. When they go caput they tend to leak and/or make a noise.

Could be blocked veins in rad, but i think you fitted a new one so probably not that?

Thermostat sticking shut? Does the rad and thermo- rad hose get hot?

John

I don't know the answers to any of those things John.... but yes, I have just come back from Stanford Hall.

I had the only 33 and there weren't many people there at all (due to the weather) although it was fine once we got there.

I'll check those things over... Thanks!

Yes, it's got a new thermostat and rad.. perhaps one's on the blink!

Bob

Could it be due to no heater matrix or that the gauge is out?
You could check the CTS output when it gets to 100, not mph and not whilst driving. Laughing

I'm working on the premise that it's ok standing still and ok around town, up to about 50 mph, but then at speed on the motorway the temperature goes right up.

Hmmm.... this implies (the around town bit) that the cooling system is working just fine.

Theory : could this be throttle body misalignment? As on the motorway I'm just slightly pressing the throttle which would then open only two inlets with a totally incorrect mixture for a prolonged period (as it's "programmed" for four?)

Firstly Bobber, do you know if the impeller on the 33's waterpump is plastic, if so it could have cracked and when pushed stop spinning when at higher rev's, a quick test would be to start the car warm it up til the fan kicks in then give it a fair bit of steady rev's to see if it does the same. My wifey's 147 had this issue and unfortunatly needed a new pump. Hope its not the problem for you as its practicly d-day Mad .

If the temp isn't rising any more than 100 ie not over heating then it should be able to cope with that surely?

Thanks Johnboy.... I've already got a switch for the fan (as the thermocontact doesn't work properly!)

Yes, I'll be flushing and waxing and flossing etc... Wink

Hi,
Check ignition advance (not enough= overheating), proper mixture (too lean=overheating, can happen at high load if the fuel pump does not have sufficient flow), clogged exhaust (overheating once again)
regards,
zp

Chaps, I think it's down to the circuit not pressurizing correctly as the pressure release valve on the cap is always open. I have a replacement coming today.

Still have other leaks though around the hose clips. I think this is due to corrosion on the union joints which then stop the hoses from fitting flush against the metal. Oh well... probably need to run down the unions to a nice smooth finish and then replace all the hoses for new.

Not going to happen before SPA though.... could be interesting.

One for the kitbag-

But I wouldn't put this sh*t in unless you're in real trouble.

Cheers,

John

Hmmm.... not keen on that stuff John, it's like Holts Stop Rad Leak (or whatever it's called!?!?)

Suppose it could be good to get us out of trouble if need be. This might seal leaks around the ends of hoses?

Pretty sure I've actually got some of this somewhere.

Correction : RadWeld.

Bob.

If you get this cap and the system pressurises properly then aren't the leaks going to become gushing geysers?

Good question Lee! I would think that's logical!

We're having another good tighten up tomorrow morning before we leave...

Best of luck mate. All my unions are quite rusty and dont have leaks so maybe a good arnie tighten up will do the trick.
