Hi guys,
I went all the way around a roundabout the other day fairly quick and could smell fuel.
The tank was nearly full, could I have a filler neck leak or petrol cap leak, how do I go about testing for this.
One thing I have noticed for a long time is that I no longer get the hissing sound when I take the fuel cap off to fill up, the locking mech for the fuel filler cap is also stuck but twists on and off ok.

Hi,

Chuck it 'round the roundabout again and if the fuel has gone down the outside of the wing it's the cap, else if on the tyre, probably the rubber concertina between the plastic filler mouth and downpipe.

I'm guessing if you no longer get the 'whoosh' there is an air leak somewhere, most probably one of the above, or the rubber tube from the plastic downpipe to the tank could be perished, but i think this would then leak all the time.

When I fill up, I always fill up to the brim and haven't seen any leaks yet Smile

) when I fill up, where is the tank vent?

JC, that is normal and you should get that, as far as I know, I am not getting it.
I assume that air is allowed to be sucked into the tank as it empties, otherwise it would implode?

Am I missing anything?

When I fill an almost empty tank I have to go really slowly for the first five to ten litres or the fuel just blows back out.

The tank is of course full of fuel vapour which, I guess, is less mobile than air and therefore is reluctant to get out of the way for the incoming fuel. It was my understaning the most cars had a vent to allow it to escape.

Interesting our old 33 used to do this too (just one of many 'ahhh, yes, I remember" moments when we got this one).

Surely they didn't do this from new.

I have only had problems with late 16v cars. All others fill fine. (The wonders of progress again.)

Hi

With the leak, my old Sportwagon leaked from the seam I think, and then from the seal around the fuel gauge sender unit. Neither expensive to fit, just horrible jobs where you are bound to get covered in petrol.

The fuel all down the side of the car was a good give away lol, I just filled up and noticed that the rubber ring in the fuel cap is missing.

Anyone got one spare??

Hi

It is worth checking other cars. The 75 uses the same fuel cap I think.

However there are a couple of different versions of the same cap (Alfa did a load a few years ago which didn't seem to fit that well) so not certain the seals will be the same.
