Hi,

On my pre-mot checks I noticed that one front floor bung (those circular plates/pressings/bungs) looked abit suspect and it pulled to bits with very little force.

I stripped back the carpet and damp felt( Evil or Very Mad ) to find the floor to be fine but the circular part crumbled away leaving a clean round hole. As a temporary measure I stuck a bit of plate over the top and sealed it both sides with mastic and spray black dinol underseal.

The sud used to have rubber bungs in these holes. Has anyone had experience of replacement plates/ bungs.

Mot tester didn't bat an eyelid at my rather hasty and fresh repair, but I'd like to try and weld it or something when time permits.

John

I assume these bungs are no longer available. Only trouble with welding them up is if you have some water ingress then you have no option of removing the bung for drainage purposes.

I would weld plates over these holes.
Then purchase some rubber bungs/grommets and cut new holes at a suitable low point in the floor to fit the bungs, only need to be an inch or so in diameter.

Than,

Were the s3 33s originally fitted with rubber. I haven't yet really determined what the original fitment is, i suppose i need to lift the carpet on the other side. I thouht they were possibly kind of tin like big core plugs?

Cheers,

John

Hi ,

As far as I know there were either metal or rubber plugs fitted to the floor. Mine which is an early 1991 model has metal plugs whereas later models were switched to rubber.

Both parts are out of production.

Here is a photo of the plugs

Hmm. I'm pretty sure mine are metal and it's a '94 model. One plug(front passenger footwell) does have a bit of rust round it.

Your piece http://www.alfa-restoration.co.uk/floor/33floor.htm is interesting, gritsop.

Hi,

Than kindly supplied me with some rubber bungs, and one is now neatly in place in the drivers footwell.

Although the bung-hole was still intact, I ended up welding a plate under the floor to the front of the hole with a semi-cirle cut out as the 'transverse' floor seam had a couple of inches of rot in it which was ground out.

This was caused by longterm slight water ingress at the top of the drivers door which secretly worked its way under the carpet making the soundproof felt nice and damp. The manky felt has been dispensed with, and alfas rubber mastic coathas done it's job as the rest of the footwell is sound.
