I used a can of Abro Motor Flush before the oil change (to Mobil 1 synthetic) after I bought the Imola. The tappets were slightly noisy then, and were no different after the oil change. The noise became gradually worse and I pulled the heads a year (14,000km) later.
The oil was very dirty before the change, so the flush was in hope of a general cleanout of the whole system, and to make sure all traces of the dirty oil were removed.
Who knows if the flush made any difference? I doubt it, and if I'd pulled the heads a year sooner I might have saved the camshafts. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. Good to know.
I also heard negative comments about flushes. They can make the situation worse as the oil galleries can get further blocked by debris coming off during the process.
Just frequent oil changes.
You know I revved the engine very high yesterday coming home from work and the tappet noise became a little intermittent when I parked in the garage, even a little less noisy.
Also I was on semi oil before the tappet noise appeared. Maybe the synthetic cleared some debris and blocked oil galleries and the high revving helped to clear some.
Who knows really?
Maybe another change back to semi (some cheaper stuff) and give it a few hard runs to see if I hear any changes, if not then off come the heads.
I'm looking at prices of new cams anyway.
Maybe change cams and tappets while it's open. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Anyone know if I can fit a mechanical tappet cam support onto a cylinder head from a hydraulic version 33? much easier to access and add shims via the top plate/cover, also revs higher.
Thinking of putting fast road cams with mechanical tappets onto my engine instead of the hydraulic tappets and standard cam. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Anybody know the dimensions of the alfa romeo 33 hydraulic tappets?
I've got the exact clearance specs but the general size?
I'm looking at using the INA 034 109 309 AD.
They are 35mm x 26mm
The tappet housing of the 33 heads are just over 35mm.
Also I see these tappets have a diameter of 34.97mm. Closer to the alfa dimensions. Maybe the INA above have a diameter just under 35mm to fit a bore/housing of 35mm which is the alfa size.
What is the stem length on the alfa tappets?
Outside Diameter: 34.97 mm
Length: 26.300 mm
Stem Yes/No: Yes
Stem Length: 14.700 mm
To Suit Bore: 35

Great info thanks.
I'll look for the INA ones here.
I really thought the INA 034 109 309 AD. would fit as they appeared for the same models as the BGA alfa tappets. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Same as INA as I listed.
I'm contacting Audi here in Uruguay. They have to have these here!!! _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

They told me that #034109309 is not in the same group as # INA : 420 0022 10 .
But I believe 034109309 is the correct one to fit an 8v alfa.
Well I hope so as there is no returns policy with this product after I buy it.

Not good - ok tappets cheap and easy to replace but one of the lobes on the cam is worn.
What do I do? Buy a new set for 400 quid
Have them re-ground?

I think you have to pull both camshafts and examine and measure them carefully before you decide, to see if any more lobes are worn, as regrinding cost will be per cam.
Almost all my lifters had wear, some much worse than others, and the tips of some cam lobes were curved axially instead of being straight.
I was a bit lucky, I bought both my camshafts on eBay, one from UK for 50 pounds, one from Germany for 20€, but took a chance on them being the same, as one was from a 145 - the list I had said it was the same, and it was...
All I can see on ebay now is http://shop.ebay.de/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=nockenwelle+alfa+33&_sacat=See-All-Categories
I checked UK, France, Italy and Germany _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. '94 Trofeo 1.4 ie (F), '93 Imola 1.3/1.4 ie (now for breaking) (F), '91 1.7 ie (GB)(spare car), '86 Sprint 1.5 QV (F). '87 VW Syncro camper (F), '73 NSU Ro80 (F), '99 Fiat Seicento (F) |

And I presume the valves are being checked and their faces and seats recut/ground if necessary.
Also check that the corrosion around the water passages is not too serious - i.e. it does not go beyond the edge of the gaskets. Make sure you use a good antifreeze/anticorrosion mixture in future.
When you get the heads back check all the passages and spaces for anything that might have got in there, and clean/blow through with compressed air if possible, all the oil passages in the heads and cam supports. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Cheers.
yep getting the valve seals changed and checked tomorrow. I think the calve seats are very good as I got 190 psi compression on each cylinder.
When I drained the coolant/antifreeze it was like brand new, just any dirt at all. And all pipes look very clean.
I'll make sure all passages are blown through.
Thanks for the tips. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

I don't want to waste the pricey 2 litres of 300v I've got.
So I think I will put 1.5 litres of Motul syn 300v 15w/50 in and 3 litres of semi 20w/50 Havoline(Texaco/chevron) protect shield into my engine. Leaving me a little of 300v left to top up over time.
Does this sound ok?

more progess. Decided to take out the pistons as I couldn't clean them properly while they were still in the block.
Probably change the big end shells and rings while I'm doing everything else even though I have good compression.

Piston 3 has some pitting. I know this is common on piston three due to a design flaw with the oil sensor on this cylinder.
I will sand them all down to get a smooth finish on each one, and probably weight them after to make sure there isn't a big difference in any.

Flex-Hone being delivered in a week or so. Got to prepare the block to use this.
Just thinking about the oil vapor circuit. don't want any more dirty oil being thrown into the carbs or inlet manifolds.
Will take clean filtered air from the airbox and feed that into the inlet manifolds.
Block off the inlets on the trumpets.
Also place thsi small oil catch container in line with the oil fill pipe and the other end with a pipe leading up to a filter.
