Hi guys,
How much material can be safely sanded off the top of the piston head, especially the top sides where the detonation normally occurs without compromising structural integrity?
Got some pitting maybe 0.2mm deep on 2 pistons.
Already sanded them a lot to make them smooth and no difference in weight so far (well no more than 1 g as my scale has a graduation of 1 gram - didn't show any difference)
And I started with 320 paper up to 1500, then polished with fine paste.
Can I file the top sides down a fraction to get rid of the hairline dents/pints to polish them?
Cheers. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

All I want to do is remove the final hairline pits here, must be about 0.1-0,2mm deep nothing more. Aiming to get a mirror finish like piston 2 on the right.

Well I thought what the hell. They are really old anyway, everything else going in is new.
Lets have a go.
Sanded the crowns down to a really nice smooth finish working up to 1200 grit. Then I'll use the dremel with some smooth polish.
Only about 0.5 grams off each one so the pitting was actually very shallow:D
Now the inside dome to do.
These will look like a stainless steal chromed pan after I've finished with them.
