Think I may of mixed up the plug leads
What is the firing order? And also which direction does the distributor rotate
It's not been a good day, the clutch on the spider gave up the ghost on the way to work this morning.
And yes Heidi you are quite welcome to come down with the matches _________________ Presntly own

Firing order 1 3 2 4 on boxers(as opposed to 1 3 4 2 on most 4 cylinder engines)..
Rotor arm rotates clockwise viewed from above I'm pretty sure.. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Thanks for that, been struggling with the rotation because you can't turn the key and see the distributor at the same time _________________ Presntly own

Sometimes the spring goes and the carbon button/brush/? becomes loose rather than sprung. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

IT LIVES!!!
New dizzy cap and some arcing around the coil sorted out and it started.
With a little help from the jump leads and the wife's mini.
Seems to be running nicely, just a bit of a blow on an exhaust gasket, not sure which one yet as I didn't want to lie on the damp ground. _________________ Presntly own

Nice one Ian. Simple fix in the end.
Hope the manifold gasket is as easy........I always dread taking off those nuts from the studs. |

I use High temperature silicone sealer instead of the flaky gaskets, it has never let me down , seals better and easy to remove if you need to take the manifold back off. I was recommended by Adie at AHM. _________________ PHAT 33 |

Someone help me I'm at whitsend with this effin car
I'm seriously considering putting a match to it.
As you know I got it started the other day but when I went to take it for a spin to blow out the cobwebs the lights decided to play up flicking on and off.
So the next day I went out and had a fiddle with various connections to try and sort the light problem.
While doing this id started her up and run her up to temp,I then went to go for a drive but as soon as I put my foot on the throttle pedal the engine cut out and has not fired since.
I've just spent ages fiddling with it, I have a healthy spark, there is fuel in it, although when I take plugs out they are bone dry.
What the f#+k is going on? _________________ Presntly own

Sounds like the fuel pump diaphragm has an issue, I can't tell you much else I'm afraid as I use an electric Facet Redtop pump to cope with the demands of higher RPM. _________________ PHAT 33 |

Do you have another electronic ignition module you can try?
They should be available new - they're common to quite a few european cars. You might find one in the scrap yard(late 80s - early 90s cars). _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Hi,
If you got spark at the plugs the fuel supply is likely to be the issue.
you should be able to remove the air filter and ducts to the carbs and look through the carbs.
While depressing the throttle you shall see a fuel spray from the nozzles.
If not your carbs are empty and chances are you have a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or cracked fuel hose in the circuit.
disconnect the fuel hose from either carb, try to draw some fuel from the hose applying vacuum (don't swallow fuel!).
If all you can suck is air, you have a leak in the system. If you can suck fuel, the pump is dead. If you can't suck at all, the circuit is clogged.
regards,

Thanks for your suggestions and ideas guys.
I'm off to the States for 10 days on Tuesday so it'll have to wait till I get home now before I have another look at it. _________________ Presntly own

Finally got an hour spare this afternoon so as the sun was out I went out to have a look at it.
I took fuel hose off, put a coke bottle on it & spun it over, the bottle was filled very quickly.
When the throttle is pumped I can clearly see petrol being squirted in.
I have a good spark so why the f#+k won't it start?
And when the f#+k is it going to stop raining?
I was so close to deploying the swan vestas today but after half an hour of working on it the rain came down so hard I would never of got it lit!! _________________ Presntly own

Are your carbs blocked? Have tried Squirting some fuel down the inlets to see if it fires then dies _________________ WODA WE NEED? MORE POWER!!
