|
|
Goodmorning,
Anybody can help me with this,
I was going on a41 (south) and uphill before hendon tube station , when i switched from 3rd to 4th, i heard a noise and could not "lock in" to 4th gear. the gearbox was loose (clutch is ok).
therefore the car is now stuck with 3 rd gear inside..
I am suspecting that a bolt or a cable has snapped from the gearbox selector..
Any ideas about possible price of spare parts?
many thanks,

Its either one of two things (both of which have happened to me)
1) "Gear level feels like a spoon in a tea cup":
Gear linkage have come away and it quite easy to solve - get under the car and look around near below the gear stick, if it has come away then you can spot it easily. It is a vertical tube (normall has rubber tube in it too) on the end of a rod that goes to the gearbox, and the other is a pole with a vertical pole on the end that that slots into the vertical tube. On the end of the vertical pole is a hole for a split pin. This is a common problem I believe, and is easier to spot than it is to describe!!!
2) "Only have one gear, even though it feels as though you are changing when moving the level"
Something internal in the gearbox - we had a very nasty noise and the 'box only had third, regardless of which gear it felt like it was moved into. There was a nastybearing noise for ages before this happened... Simply got a replacement gearbox (used)
Hope yours is problem 1) ! |

If it is a series 3 then it doesn't have a hole for a split pin. It has a groove for a circlip. The circlips pop off with age and people drill a hole and replace them with a split pin. The lever is actually quite hard steel and it is not easy to drill it.
All the best

What was it then? Mine has just gone a second time It has gone like the 2nd one, but not stuck in gear yet, just noisy bearings in 4th and 5th below 40mph and I am not putting it in third (realy bad in that one), but managed to "limp home" 110 miles like that..!! Bloody noisy now and I doubt will go more than a mile or so. Luckily at our garage now.
By the way AK - coming along to my track day in October? |

Hi !
exact description even though it does not make sense..
(circlip missing on selector rod. fit new with washer (??))
i need to get new tyres, suspension and brakes (and more horsepower!) before i drive it faster.
sorry but it would not be wise to race it now..
what are you planning to do with the gear box? how much is a used one?

After getting a variety of quotes (from £450-£900 for recon) I found a used one with 30 day guarentee so at least if it turns up with any issues I have comeback. Set me back £125 delivered, so not bad....
Glad your problem was the minor one! |

My Original spec 33 16v goes past 100 km/h in 2nd... It goes to about 105 km/h before the rev limiter
I know what you mean about the sound leaves me speechless everytime

Have you tried going to a Alfa Dealer? It's a very cheap part...

I am trying to get the size so that I can get one from an engineers supplies today. The rod dia would be useful. |
