Al,
I did mine exactly the same way as he did on youtube. It took a couple / few evenings work - but set about it methodically and just slowly got on with it. It is easy to loose parts so you have to be quite methodical and careful - but it is quite satisfying. I also re-ground the tops of my tappets. All 16 - which takes a while. I also found this to be very helpful:

Let me know if I can help further as I quite enjoyed doing it.
I can't tell you the results and the engine is sat in the garage waiting to go back in - but it shouldn't be long now. _________________ The faster the better. |

I suggest you are careful about how much you grind down the tops of your tappets.

Thanks Guys
I was going to ask about the case hardening on the tappets and the exact amount of roughness they should have.
Edward, did yours look like the ones in the video, when will you start the engine to see if its worked? _________________ x2 33 16v

Al,
I picked out of all the tappets that I had the ones that had the very least amount of marks on them. Most had almost no marks at all and I spent ages inspecting them to pick the 16 that needed the least amount of work doing. I worked on them very carefully, makings as sure as possible they were flat, and used plenty of WD40 and what I thought was the correct wet and dry. They came up with a very smooth finish and not the grainy finish in the other link I put up. Cant quite remember the finish from the ones in the video. I guess grainy would be good to start with - as they may hold oil better - but mine were more smooth than that.
I may have a photo somewhere. Hopefully the engine should be in the car before long - and that will then tell me whether I got it right! _________________ The faster the better. |
