I changed cams as well. at 180 duration and about 11mm lift. What are the chances of me getting faulty tappets? an They are original ones and the sound is coming from both sides. The exact sound when the hydraulics are worn.

Thanks for any feedback.

My 33 1.7 16v had an hydraulic tappet lock up at 25 000 km which wore a lobe off the cam. It had sounded like a worn small end conrod bush but was eventually diagnosed as a tappet. At the time there was a shortage of spare tappets in Europe which leads me to think that this could have been a common problem. After rebuilding the RH cylinder head and road testing the car, a tappet in the LH head developed the same problem. Luckily that cam wasn't damaged.

Best to double check that noise.

Rob

Have you got all the air out of the system??

Take the plugs out and turn the engine over for a few minutes and see if this solves it.

Damn! It's really starting to worry me. The previous tappet did worn one of my cam lobes. That's why I changed to brand new ones (and new cams!).

Strangely, yesterday's noises had reduced but still at least one or two distinct tappets still claking. The engine has been started for more than 10 minutes already. Everything should have set in by now.... Now I can't drive my Alfa... Is it possible that the tappets have been kept too long and now has problems?

Another thing is my oil pressure reads below 3 bar upon revving. Thanks for the response.

By running it with the plugs out you WILL get rid of air in the tappets, you won't with the engine running

That is too low. It should be atleast 4 bars when engine warm.
Maybe you have air in the system, or the oil pump is worn, or the bearings.

I'll try to get a pump today. I don't think I'd like to drive with that kindda sound.
