It's that popular subject again.
For years I have put up with intermittent operation of the speedo in my '84 series 1 - usually a few whacks to the console or wiggling the electrical connector at the back of the cluster would sort out the problem for quite some time.
Recently I resolved to replace the push connector with hard wiring and a screw terminal block. This worked fine and I believed the problem had gone forever.
But I was forgetting it is an Alfa after all! You don't ever eliminate electrical problems - just shift them somewhere else. Now what's happening is that the speedo (and odometer, and fuel consumption reading) will work for maybe 10 km or so, then suddenly go dead. No amount of whacking, prodding, pleading or cajoling will work, but it seems that everything will work again after an overnight rest. The problem could be the electrics in the speedo mechanism (but no smoke or anything suspicious looking) or I'm thinking it could be the final drive sensor that is playing up.
My question, after this long message, is: what is the output from the speed sensor? Can it be measured with a digital multimeter, or is an oscilloscope needed (could be difficult to organise that one with the car moving!). Are there any practical test options, other than replacement of the unit with another? Can anyone help?
Frustrated,
Rob |

Hi,
A friend of mine who owns a s3 1991 Alfa 33 had also problem with his speedo and odometer - He had it repaired at a cars electrician garage which solved it for a couple of years. Now his odometer does not work and the speedo won't exceed 60 kms/h no matter the speed.
I think you should check the speedo devide and not the sensor on the gearbox. Also I checked the workshop manual and nothing is stated- Only that "In case of malfuction of speed indicator device, remove sensor from gearbox after removing retaining spring, and replace it".
According to my AR dealer this sensor does not fail.
