Hi there, can anyone help me locate the idle jets on my 1986 1.5 QV carbs on a Aus/NZ model. I have one cylinder that dosen't idle consistantly, I have tried swapping the leads and plugs but to no avail, also what should be the correct spark gap...I'm running champions... as I'm on a bit of a budget.
Thanks I have learned heaps on this site, most people seem to have the same probs as me! (with their 33's that is) I am not alone! |

Hi Kev
On the outside of the carbs near the top is a large brass screw for each choke (one is almost under the fuel banjo). These are the idle jet retainers. The idle jet itself is a push fit in them and will come out when you undo them. Three points.
(1) The idle squirt hole is tiny and can only be cleared effectively with compressed air
(2) the idle jet has a small flat on it to align the squirt hole correctly. Take note as it will not quite go home enough to screw up if you get it slightly ascew.
(3) Because the hole is so small it is easily blocked . Look to your fuel filter.
(4) This is an extra . (I can count) In NZ ,the original fuel hoses don't like unleaded. Don't ask me why but they seem to degrade on the inside and produce fine particles that are perfect for blocking the idles. I found it hard to believe when told about it but replacement from the filter to carbs cured the recurring idle problem on all three of our cars.

Hi Kev
One further point . The idle jet is sealed by a small o ring . It may stay in the carb body when you withdraw the jet but be careful that it doesn't come halfway out and get lost. If it comes out with the jet then use a little petroleum jelly to lube when you refit, if it doen't come with the jet then use a mirror to check that there is one in there.
