Trying to get the temperature gauge working on my 1991 16v cloverleaf.
Am sure it was working but now its not. Could just be a couple of wires loose. Have found the sensor on the block by the oil filter with no wire on it. What colour wire should be connected? Is there an easy check to see whether the sensor is working.
Has anyone got a wiring diagram for this car that they can mail me? Could do with underbonnet wire colours nad relevant wires to the dash.
Anyone any other tips?
Cheers. |

Hi...
The sender for the temperature gauge is located on the right intake manifold, under the throtlle body.
The sensor by the oil filter, is the oil pressure switch. (it can also be mounted on the block, bellow the distributtor.
hope this helps

Hi.
Cheers for the reply.
If I stand in front of the car looking into the engine bay I have a temperature sensor on the right on the front cylinder which if disconnected upsets the running so I guess this is the one the ECU uses.
Beneath the dizzy at the back in the middle of the engine there is a sensor, which is this one?
By the oil filter on the cylinder that is back on the left there is another sensor.
If you could tell me which is which and what colour wires should go to them I'd really appreciate it.
Cheers. |

Uhhh?? You sould NEVER disconect sensors with the engine running, and battery still connected...
Basically it goes like this:
On the left side (driver in the seat) bellow the throttlebody, its were its located the NTC (Coolant temperature sensor). the wires should be black and brown, but are inside an insulator "rubberwire".
The others i`ll check and will be back on this
Take care

Hi
Seems that i mixed up topics, and ended up thinking that you had problems with the NTC.
Must remember to format my brain....(C:/FORMAT BRAIN:)
You are trying to locate the sensor for the Temperarature gauge...
The sensor is exactly that, near the oil filter. The wire should be brown (Just one wire). The sensor/switch for the temperature light on the dashboard is located on the same engine side, but bellow the right throttle body. (opposite one from the NTC) This uses one yellow/black wire.
To check if the sender is working use a multimeter and set it to Ohms.
Find a ground on the body (of the car-You dont need to call your girlfriend/wife to help with this). Turn the engine and let the car warm up.
At 40º, the multimeter should read between 900-1400.
At 60º , the values are between 470-600
At 80º, 235-300
At 90º, 175-215
If this values are correct, your temp sensor is Ok, and the prob should be somewere else. (probably the gauge itself).
Hope this helps (and sorry by the mix up)
