Hi,
Don't know if anyone remembers this, but the server had a virus a while back, and half the old posts are gone. Thanks to Keith for getting us all back on the board so quick though!
I remember an old topic regarding noisy hydraulic tappets, which can be due to an 'airlock' in the part that the oil is supposed to 'pump up' in the tappet.
Someone (I think Gary, Darlington) suggested a method of expelling this airlock from the tappet - but I can't remember what it was!!!!
Anyone have any ideas?

hi,
immerse the tappets in a cooking pot full of engine oil.
cook slowly and watch air bubbles escape from the tappets.
when no more bubbles pop out let cool.
when cold get the tappets out of the oil and install them in engine.
do not reuse the oil for frying potatoes.
and never tell your girlfriend how you used her cooking gear and kitchen!
best regards,
zp |

Hi,
Every mechanic needs a kitchen!
The kitchen sink is great for cleaning out the breather pipes with Fairy.
Freezer great for testing coolant strength.
Lasagne dishes are great for catching oil and water drips.
Her best salon spec hairdryer is great for drying out condensation in headlight pre-MOT.
Extra virgin olive oil great on saws etc etc
That said I do all the cooking too!!!!

oh, that simple?
remove spark plugs, disconnect TDC sensor, crank the engine 10s a few times, let the starter/wires/battery cool between successive crankings, reinstall spark plugs and replug TDC connector.

This thread should have been in jokes & funnies. I havn't laughed so much in ages. Are we all really like this? There is even an ad on TV here at the moment where a bloke puts a rocker cover and a spanner through the dishwasher. His (actor) wife didn't think it was funny though.

Ken,
Yes, I think we are all slightly demented anyway! Think about it, only a masochist would REALLY own a 33/sud/sprint!!!!

hi,
i suppose that without pressure in the cylinders the efforts on the tappets are reduced?
i would prefer the "italian tune-up" would also help solve the problem.

Gonna try it tomorrow
However, anyone think it's best with a hot or cold engine?

COLD ENGINE....
You should never remove the spark plugs, with hot engine.
All the best

Another question! How do I stop the coil blowing up when I do this?
Thanks!

hi,
that's the reason why you should unplug the TDC sensor.

Or if you have a carby 33, I presume unplugging the primary of the ignition coil will achieve the same thing. |

Hi zenith-pbarm
if the tdc sensor breaks down.would this stop the coil from fireing? as my 16v is still dead at the moment and i think it mite be the crank sensor.
sorry bobbber to hijack your post.but i need to drive. you drive, you have friends, you walk, you walk alone

hi,
yes a dead TDC sensor will prevent the engine from firing. troubleshooting requires a scope for chacking signal while cranking but with a voltmeter on AC volts position you should see 2 or 3 volts between TDC sensor pins while cranking.
if not your sensor is dead.
