Hello again, Confused

My 33 1.5 IE with catalyst, turns a respectable (I think) average of about 10 lit/100 Kms (or for my UK friends around 30 miles to the gallon).

Does anyone gets any better values and if so how can I improve my fuel economy (the easiest the better). Any alterations or improvements (mechanical of course).

With regard to a previous topic, either 95 or 98RON unleaded produce the same consumption values although I do get a bit of a better performance.

Thanks in advance Rolling Eyes

Hi,

My 1.7IE is extremly variable. By that I mean, if I take it steady I get around 35mpg, and if I thrash it I get around 20!!!!!

You could try having the injectors cleaned. They're supposed to be done about every 30,000 miles anyway? Never tried it myself - but will shortly, and let you know the outcome.

Hi Very Happy

My 16v, is also very variable on fuel...(To be honest, i`ve never done serious calculations about fuel consumption Shocked )
The best way to keep your fuel consumption low, is to keep the injection and ignition systems in order...
Keep an eye on fuel & air filters...
Keep the injectors clean.
Check your plugs, and cables. Watch your distributor and rotor arm.
If you give it a good maintenance, it will return the favor... Wink

All the best

Probably replaceing the fuel injection system on your old IE (8v not 16v) with a better system that has block learn control and a better closed loop EFI control....The old Bosch EFI system is not the best.....Still all the effort mapping would probably cost too much.....

Hi,

My 1.4 IE can vary from 7.9 lt/100km when on the highway, and the best I have done is 10.2 in a mix of 60% suburban drive and the rest 40% highway driving; otherwise it can go 10.5 or even 11 lt/100km.

Regards,

My 1988 1.7QV usually gets slightly better than 10l/100km - mostly closer to 9 or better if I go on long trips. I mostly drive in city and urban motorway conditions but try to avoid sitting in rush hour traffic queues.

Last summer I did a trip from one end of New Zealand's North Island to the other, and averaged about 7.3l/100km over the 2500km trip.
Soon after I bought the car, I had a carb balance, new carb floats, spark plugs, air filter, distributor cap and rotor installed, and that made a huge improvement to the economy. Any improvements from my new sports rear muffler must have been counteracted by my right foot, though. Twisted Evil

hi,

first remove the catalyst you'll not gain much power but fuel consumption will be reduced (around 0.5 liters each 100 kms)
second inspect fuel tank as those get rusty and leak when old. and fuel gets avay in vapours...reduced consumption on my 1.3ie from 9 ltrs/100kms to less than 7 when replacing tank!

my best fuel consumption is 4.6 ltrs/100kms (tires overinflated to reduce loss, no additional weight, no wind, flat road)
my worst...i'd rather not tell!
average is around 6.8 ltrs/100kms

regards,
zp
