Hello all

When I just want to wash the screen i.e. you pull the stalk towards you, the wipers do not always work. Sometimes only the washers squirt and the wipers don't come on, other times it works fine. All the other wiper settings seem to work fine.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Rich

Pull the stalk towards you to operate the squirters, and move it down as normal to make sure the wipers go! Laughing

Sorry Bellamachinna - its a series 3 car (1994).

Thanks for that Ben - my point is that normally when you pull the stalk towards you, it should squirt and then automatically wipe about 4 or five times and then stop, on my car only the squirters work when I do this.

Thanks

Hi Rich

Try, changing the bottom left relay on the fuse box. That relay, controls the intermitence of the wipers.
Be aware, that i`m not sure that its this one, or the one sitting next to it.(on his right side). Be also aware, that i`m used to a LHD car, and on RHD cars, the locations can be different.

On series 1/2 cars its located on the bulkhead, but on series 3 it was placed inside the car.

Hope this helps
P.Camilo

Hi Bellamachinna

I'll try looking at the relay in the fuse box as you suggest (the one next to the steering column?) I've just got a service manual for the car which I hope will be able to confirm the relay I need to change.

Thanks

Rich

Rich,
It may be the contact inside the stalk essembly. I tried mine the other day and the wipers were not working with the squirters Crying or Very sad but with a few pulls (ok, about 20) they sparked into life. I'm going to dismantle the stalk and clean the contact properly.........this could be your problem too as if your wipers work normally on the other settings ie on intermittent/1/2 speeds then i'd say your relay is ok.

Yeah that sounds logical Lee, I'll perhaps try to dismantle the stalk and clean up the contacts as you suggest.

Thanks

The relay for the wipers is the bottom row, second from the left (X in the diagram):

Code:
   0
0  0
0  0
0X00

Hope that helps!

Also note that while the relay is dying - you should be able to hear it clattering away like Granny's teeth in a jar!!!! Laughing

Mine is doing this at the moment..... There appears to be two versions of this relay available. One standard one (£24) and one which is used for "radio connection" (£10) - wonder what that means??? That's what ePer says anyhow.

I've just fiddled about with the stalk, ie pulled it alot (stop laughing at the back!) and it seems to have recovered to almost normality. Maybe it was still asleep after my cars 7 month hibernation!

Thanks for all your advice

Switches are like variable resistors in as much as the contacts get a film of oxidation on them, which decays performance.

We've all had (I think!) the radio or stereo or whatever with the crackling volume control - and ONE way to make it crackle less is to turn the control rapidly in both directions, which slides the contact over the resistor wire - which to some degree removes some of the oxydation.

So Rich - keep wiggling that stalk! Or perhaps take the stalk out and clean it with some glass/sand paper and a bit of WD40 (TM).
