I was accelerating to enter a motorway, when suddenly the engine noise became louder and the engine lost power on high revs and also when the revs are low and I press the throttle pedal deep, the engine does not respond as it should but returns this deep sound like an engine without air filter. On idle and when revving up on neutral, everything sounds ok. Oil and water haven't mixed, so could it be head gasket blown between cylinders?
The car's 1990 33 1.7 16V QV.

Exhaust ok? Especially the manifold connections/gaskets under the car?

Yes, exhaust manifold is ok. In my experience a loose or broken manifold or gaskets make noise already on idle. I'm wondering if the head gasket is blown between cylinders and under load if blows into the adjacent cylinder which has inhaust valves open - thus the noise. I think next step might be removing plugs and checking compressions. The problem is that if the leak is small it may not be visible in compression.
