I am delighted to say that after many months of sitting waiting for me to get my backside into gear, my 1983 Series 1 has passed its MOT and is well and truly back on the road.

There is still some work to be done, the central locking is not working, there is a small hole in the NS door pillar and the tailgate is black whereas the rest of the car is green. It is however running extremely well and is still a pleasure to drive, despite its long rest Very Happy

The downside is that with no apparent end to my heart problems, there is still no propect of getting back to work so the finances are hugely under pressure. It is therefore likely that later this month either my Series 1 or Giardinetta will have to be sacrificed to satisfy the bank manager so watch this space Sad

Hi John

The carbs are Weber 36 IDF which are well in tune which makes it a more enjoyable drive than my Giardinetta. However to be fair Les Dufty (Automeo) has recently set up the carbs on the Giardinetta and he doubted that the carbs had ever been touched. Needless to say, the carb set up was all over the place with one cylinder running on neat fuel, while one of the others was almost neat oxygen. I am therefore in the process of getting some miles on the clock before he has the car back in for some fine tuning. The one thing that is really hacking me off with this car is the speedo and despite having changed the speedo head, cable and sensor I still cannot get the damn thing to work.

The main problem that I have is that Rangie No 1 required new brake discs, pads and pipes together with suspension and shocks for its MOT and that was before the engine blew up. I have replaced the engine with the V8 from my other Rangie (which is low mileage and was running well) but now it is running at best on 6 cylinders when it gets warm. However it is running well when cold. The obvious have been replaced but what we now think that the LPG system is malfunctioning so we are disconnecting it and changing the injectors for petrol only variants to see whether it will then run on all 8 cylinders as the engine gets warm. This LPG theory would explain the engine blowing up and why an engine that has run well for months is now running like the proverbial sack of s**t. This is costing a lot of money and having started it would be financially suicidal to stop now.

The second Rangie needs inner wings and sills before being fitted with my 300Tdi unit and its return to the road is likely to be October / November. In the meantime I have got to continue to haemorage money until I can consider getting one or other Rangies on the market. As I have two rather large dogs ie a Rottie and a Weinerahmer, one of the Rangies will need to earn its keep and I still have two Series 3 33s to get up and running.

Well that's my tale of woe but at the end of the day, one Rangie and two 33s will be staying with one Rangie and two 33s going but which ????????? decisions decisions decisions.......................... Rolling Eyes If I were a betting man I would think Rangie No 1, the Giardinetta and Series 3 No 1 will remain with the rest being sacrificed. Oh did I forget to mention the Frontera - well that's another story Confused

With best regards

Chris

Iam in the middle of putting a series 1 gold clover 1500 single carb back on the road it came with a mot but the last tester must have forgot his dog and stick that a day bit of welding was not because of holes i had to redue all the previous cock ups over the years now it has green body and black wings i will get it resprayed over the winter just want to drive it now before summer is over. The car was registered 1august 1983 and i think it was 4000th of the line.

Hi,

Chris- loose the Fronterra then! Around my way they are driven by dodgey window cleaners and tree surgeon types Laughing

I would John believe me, if there was sufficient oil pressure to get it out of the garage!!! I have to admit to having bought a second with bodywork that is shot to pieces but with a sound engine and brand new exhaust. Once I have one decent (is there such a thing) Frontera it will be sold at the earliest opportunity and I have already done a deal to rid myself of any bits that are left over!! I would not want to be confused with a dodgy window cleaner or tree surgeon as I have no head for heights whatever Laughing

Talking of MOTs Suds, I always use the same garage and I have got to know the tester very well. He would have had great delight if I had presented my car with its footwells in the condition that I bought it. All looked superficially in order but a closer inspection revealed that the plates had been glued in place with no sign of a weld. When I gave it a good tug, it all came away in my hands. The more I look at mine the more I am finding ie the front door bottoms have been badly repaired so a spare red pair are likely to add to its Joseph and Techicolour Dreamcoat appearance. ie originally green and now with a black tailgate and red front doors. Anyway I wish you every success with your restoration project - the more back on the road the merrier Rolling Eyes

Oh and by the way, on the Rangie front, with the gas system now completely disconnected the engine is once again running as it should on petrol, albeit at 15 mpg. I have spoken to the local LPG installer and he has given me a number of ideas but sensibly he has suggested running it on petrol for a while to ensure that it is trouble free before starting the process of elimination with the LPG. Confused
