Hello,
welcome to forum.
Are you sure it is ElectroMagnetic Coupling and not Viscous coupling/mounts between prop shafts?

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I took the car to a garage and they put it on a lift we looked under the car and the prop shaft back from the Electromagnetic Coupling is in good order when you turn the front wheels you could see the prop slipping as well as the sound of cogs grating coming from the Electromagnetic coupling! _________________ Laurie

It is possible that the teeths on el.magnetic coupling are in bad condition.
I've had al parts of the transmision apart, and it looks like they are the weakest part of it all.
These teeths:

Alan nice pics it could be ECM prob but it also could be diff/gearbox or even wheel joints problem.
What confuses me is that with car lifted up there shouldn't be and difference if steering wheel is on full lock or not.
Laurie it would be best to:
0. Unplug 4x4 ecm fuse or take out whole relay with fuse out of socket. 4x4 warrning light should go on and stay. If it stops it is something from 4x4 transmision, if not it is not electrical 4x4 problem -> next step
1. Unscrew front propshaft from ecm and try to see if sound repeats.
You have ruled out prop shafts and rear dif probs. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

Hi
Normal clonking is caused by the viscous coupling bouncing round on its mount when the front and rear wheels are trying to turn at different speeds.
All the best

Hi
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner life has been a bit hectic this last couple of weeks!
I did try removing the relay and the problem remained. I haven’t unscrewed the front propshaft from ecm yet .I will have to buy some ramps and pluck up the courage.
Some things I didn’t mention in my first post which I should have! Are the 4x4 warning light has only just recently come on, around the same time as the noise started.
I don’t think the 4-wheel drive has ever worked properly as it has never made the pinging noise of the emc engaging when you turn the ignition key. but the warning light did go out?
Also I am still driving the car and the noise does seem to be worse some days than others it almost feels that some thing is loose and slips in and out of place!
I guess I will know more when I eventually get under the car!

Hi, I recently bought a P4 and it does the exact same thing. I spoke to the guys at my local alfa specialist and they told me it was normal. They warned me about the mounts on the viscous diff and said the UJs and the tellescopic section of the drive shaft are prone to seizing, this can casue the diff to be ripped out of its soft mounts. My mounts look they've seen better days.
Does anyone know a distributor of these parts?
I would be interested to see if you make any more progress with your car.
Cheers

Hi
The mounts are no longer available I think (or one might be available) although someone said the bearing is shared with a 75 and still available.
Suspect it would be a fairly easy bit to copy by one of the companies who make polyeurothane suspension bushes.
All the best

Hi
Finally! due to living in a terraced road and no where to work on the car excuses excuses!! Had to take it to a garage it is the EMC. Alan you were right it is the teeths! One set of teeth completely stripped off not sure why it happened but garage are looking into rebuilding it with parts from another one! Hope it works and bracing myself for the bill Laurie _________________ Laurie
