On my Giadinetta I have changed the head and the sensor, checked all the connections and there is still no sign of life.

It is my understanding that the power feed is from the coil (green wire) but the maximum voltage that this is generating is 1.9V. My feeling is that this figure should be higher ie 12V, but nowhere in any Alfa manuals can I find reference to the voltage either in or out.

I am at my wits end and the only thought I have had is to bypass the coil and connect a powerfeed direct to the battery. However as I am dealing with the unknown I am reluctant to go there. Any advice / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In my reply to your post on alfaowner.com I wasn't sure whether you were referring to the speedo or rev counter.

Do you currently have more than one Alfa 33? Surely the easiest thing to do would be to swap instrument clusters between cars to verify whether the dials are working.

Thanks Ben and Paul. As Paul knows from my visits to him for spares, in addition to my Giardinetta (with its non working speedo), I have a series 1 with a speedo that works 99% of the time. I have therefore interchanged the components and they all work when fitted in the Series 1 but not the Giardinetta. It is this fact that leads me to the conclusion that either it is a power feed or flywheel issue in my Giardinetta.

The dilemna I have at the moment is that bodily with the exception of the OSR wheel arch the Giardinetta is very much up together but having modified the exhaust manifold and twice having set it up with a mercury manometer there appears to be a problem with no 2 cylinder. The hydrocarbon reading is very high and will not come down and on low revs it gives the impression of running on 3.5 cylinders. I am therefore on the point of getting the wheel arch sorted by grafting in a repair section and replacing its engine from the Series 1. This would give me a very sound all round car. This would then allow me at my leisure to sort the Series 1 bodywork and the Giardinetta valve problem.

Decisions, decisions Confused

Chris

Have you measured the power feed in the Series 1 then?
I would have thought the speedo got its power through the same route as every other instrument in the instrument cluster, which would point to an internal gearbox problem as the cause of your speedo trouble.

Hi Chris, all that is left then is the wiring between the sensor plug and the dash. Have you checked the three wires with a resistance meter to make sure they can all carry current (one is only a shielding wire actually isn't it). They can get broken near the plug iunder the bonnet or can get broken when bent behind the console. Hope the speedo sensor I sent you works!! Can you swap/check that?

Hi Ben and Paul. Once again many thanks for your thoughts. Yes Paul the speedo sensor you supplied works (in the Series 1 anyway) Confused I will follow the advice given and await the outcome with anticipation.

When coming home in the Giardinetta last night I was driving along in 5th gear and as I came into a roundabout I went to change down into 2nd to proceed and found that I had a gear lever feeling like a bucket of wall paper paste and I remained in 5th gear. It is evident that something has gone wrong with the gear linkage but have not yet had the chance to investigate. Surprising when you consider where I live, I managed to drive all the way home in 5th gear and park right outside my house without riding the clutch too much. Although I took a different route to normal because of the lack of gear selection, the only problem I had was approaching one set of lights which can be seen from a long way back so by dropping off my speed I was able to hold back for a green light, and there wasn't even any oncoming traffic (for the first time ever) to impede my right turn (of if there was I didn't see or hit it) Cool

Probably the typical fault of a split pin falling (or failing) out at the linkage going into the back of the gearbox.

Thank you Paul, your diagnosis is spot on. Unfortunately when the problem occured it was pitch black and my torch had mysteriously disappeared into my son's bedroom. However in daylight checking the split pin was my first point of reference and it was conspicuous by its absence. Shocked

Hi,
to get rid of that problem forever proceed as follows :

1) dismantle gear linkage and drill shift rod ; bore shall be 3.3mm

2) tap previously bore to M4 spec

3)install shift linkage in car

4)put washers on the rod

5)install C clip in its groove

6)put retainer clip across the C clip, install 20mm dia washer and torque CHC M4 bolt

7)enjoy the next million miles!

regards,
zp

Thanks ZP, the modification looks simple enough but isn't that always the case that the simple things are the best. It certainly appears more robust than the factory original. At the moment I have carried out a full repair but when the time allows and the car is next in the workshop, I will give it a go.

Regards

Chris
