hi all-

I have just purchased an 1987 alfa 33 1.5 here in australia. Apart from someone majorly backing in to it in a parking lot today I am quite liking it.

can anyone tell me how to remove the head deck - there is usually a particular method and I don't want to pull half the dash apart if not needed?

Also the car has air con but this is not working - is there a common problem that be could be relay related etc? It may well need regassing but if there is a common fault i will check that first.

i just installed a head unit for my friend in his '87 where are you in australia

basically just pop out the air vents above the radio and there are two little leavers, which you push down, one on left and right, hold them both down then at the same time pull the head unit out it should slide out

alferr- I am in Brisbane -Qld. I found out the vents came out later on which is actually quite handy for the stereo. It looks like this one was an aftermarket pioneer head unit anyway - old style where you take the volume and balance knobs off and then a couple of bolts and plates and it pulls out.

I think i probably need those levers though as the new alpine unit is just barely sitting in the space now and there is nothing to really fix it to. but I will figure something out there- speakers are a pain too as there isn't a real good place to put them.

Chris- I don't have much info on the air con - other than it simply blows hot air. I was hoping there might be a common problem to check first but if not I will just try going through your list. Appreciate the info.

I'd sack the aircon as it drains engine power and as you have the 1.5 you need all the power you can get.

Hi Gary-

apart from not bothering to fix it (and if it needs changing over to the new air con gas here then it ain't going to be fixed)- do you mean remove it from the car altogether? is there that much of a weight saving to make it worthwhile and is it a realitively simple job?

Simply removing the drive belt will do the job. If it's a weight issue, then removal of the compressor, condensers, pipes/hoses and receiver/drier, will save you about 20 kgs depending on the unit. The engine will spin more freely too.

Converting from R12 to R134a isn't that much of a drama. Considering if you want R12 you will pay a lot for the gas, if you can find a place that will sell it to you.

What sort of fittings are on the refill points. That will tell you what gas the system should be setup for as the fittings are different between the types of gas.

Sounds like it is out of gas. There should be a small window in the top of the receiver/dryer, it maybe under a sticker. Anyway with the A/C on do you see any activity through the window? If it looks like its blowing bubbles then you maybe low on gas. If there is no activity you maybe out of gas or it is fully charged and there is something else wrong.

Take it to a A/C place and get them to check it out. If it has been converted to R134a they may have included dye in the system. If it has they maybe able to find any leaks the system may have. Depends on how long it has not worked for.

If you do get them to re-gas it, replace the receiver/dryer. Since you are in Brisbane think of what the temps will be like in 6 months time.
