There are two kinds of marks on the cambelt pulleys, a pair of T:s (or more like triangles) and then two lines on the upper pulley and one in the lower. According to the factory manual at no 1 TDC there's a T at the flywheel aligned with the dial and at that the I of the lower should be between the II:s of the upper pulley. However, the last check on the manual says to align the T of the flywheel and picture shows the small T:s at the pulleys aligned. So which one is correct? I think the timing marks are: T at the flywheel and II and I aligned and this is how I have them.
BUT! The engine does not run smoothly. It seems to be entirely out of breath. I have cleaned the heads, reground the valves to their seats, changed the air cleaner, cat and the lambda probe (yes, it had difficulties passing the MOT), distributor rotor and head and spark plug wires. Next to go in is new set of the platinum plugs but I'm not very optimistic.
I have also a 1.7 8V which runs much better so something is wrong. Evil or Very Mad

I think the 'T's on the camwheels should all face eachother (in pairs) when the T on the flywheel is visible and the rotor arm of the dizzy is pointing to cylinder 1.

The I's and II's should all line up together but nothing to do with the flywheel

AAARGH Shocked

no!!!

the T mark on the flywheel shall be visible through the hole (engine @ TDC)
on each cylinder bank camshaft pulley marks I and II shall be aligned in such a way that the I is between the two bars of the II

this is the correct position for timing.
after installing the belts rotate engine two full turns and rechack proper alignment.

then rotate engine until both T marks on camshaft pulleys face each other one on cylinder bank ; in this position, loosen the tensioners, allow the spring to tension the belt, then tighten tensioner
repeat tensioning procedure on other cylinder bank

regards,
zp

T mark on flywheel must be in the center of the hole so that is aligned with a marker.
Camshaft pulleys have to be in this positions

If it's all aligned, then you turn the engine by hand so that the arrows on one pair of camshaft pulleys aligne. Now you have to see an arrow on the flywheel too.
Then you turn the engine some more to align the arrows on the other two pulleys, there must be an arrow mark on the flywheel again.
If it's all like that then it's OK Very Happy

Sorry for my english Embarassed

Excellent! Thank you all for replies. I'm still wondering how this model is so difficult to maintain. Now I'm about to re-tighten the cylinder head bolts and I have removed the M6 bolts holding the camshaft covers but I can't get the bloody cover (right side) pass the rear exhaust cam support block. There simply is no room between the head and the chassis beam.

I think there is one more thing to try before I scrap the miserable excuse of a car - remove the front engine support screws and force the engine sideways to the left to give more room to the right side of the engine bay.

Any other run into this kind of problems?
