Hi, I am trying to figure out if my temp gauge is at fault or the sender. My symptoms are, temp gauge either works ok, intermittently, or shows 40c. I have cleaned all the contacts on the console and made the contact points on the connectors fit tighter by bending out the connectors when I did my leds on the console. Now this I don’t get, when you turn off the ignition the temp gauge goes back to the middle, I assume its natural resting place.
I first thought that maybe my thermostat is at fault, but I don’t believe so due to the heater blowing warm air after 3 mins of driving and hot air after about 10 mins, am I correct?
I have bought a voltmeter and I’m poised ready to test the reading from the temp sender for the dash. I have looked at this thread http://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=3591&highlight=temp+sender but I can’t seem to find it on my motronics 4.1 16v.

Still poised with my multimeter. Looking at the diagrams from bobbber, is the gauge sender on the left side N/S, right hand drive car, behind the rear plenum inlet, is this the same for the 16v 4.1 motrinics. I haven’t had a chance to look yet as the weather has been horrible. Save me removing the sender, could I just test the resistance when the fan comes on? Giving me a resistance of 175-215 @ 90deg?
Do you think my thermostat is ok? Or could it have failed in the closed position, so my heater works? I know it’s cold now but is it possible that the gauge is correct and the engine is at 40degs, not?

Ive been offered a temp gauge sender from an 8v, will these fit and be ok to use?

Hi,

You may be able to 'test' thermostat in situe by feeling hose to rad for temp.

Old school way of testing thermostat possibly stuck closed off car is to bung it in a pan of water over the hob, heat gently and watch it pop open if it works.

I know you've had your console/s in and out alot, have you tried a diffent console/gauge for temp reading?

John
