Hi all,

I've had a cam belt let go on my 16v, and have spent the last couple of weekends tinkering to get to it and get the head off (I think I need to see what state the valves/head/pistons are in).

I've done most of the stripping, but now I've undone the cam cover I'm finding that there isn't enough space to get the cover out. It slides forwards and backwards alright, but it doesn't seem to come out and whatever way I slide it it leaves 2 of the head bolts covered.

Does anyone know how I get the cam cover out of the way to undo the head bolts? Confused

Would generally recommend dropping the engine.

You can remove a head by undoing engine mounts and tilting engine in situe, but i think it will be tricky to get the head bolts out. Dealers have/had a special tool for getting to the torx head bolts with the engine in situe.

Have a look at recent posts started by' Big al' about his belt going. It all got discussed in depth.

Thanks John, I found Big Al's thread. He's having cr4p luck!

If the weather is half decent tomorrow I'll try undoing the front engine mount and sliding the engine across. It sounds like engine out is the proper way but I've read Bobbers manual on taking the engine out and he's up to 6 pages and still not finished. So if I can get the head off in situ I will and then see what needs doing.

Hi chap

yes you can take the heads off in car.ive done it.when the crack pulley came off and recked one of the heads and bent one of the valves on the other side.undo the front mount and slid the engine over.torx t55 bit you need ok

Thanks Johnboy - It's useful to know the Torx size too as I bet I haven't got one of them. It's off to Halfords in the morning then!

hi, the cam covers will come off provided you rotate them a quarter of turn first. When they are in vertical position, front part pointing upwards, just lift them from above and, with a little tinkering they'll come loose

Thanks guys,

I undid the front engine mount but I couldn't get the engine to budge. I'll get a bar/some help and try and leaver it over.

Zp - Cheers for the tip about rotating the cam cover, I'll give that a go first.

BigAl - I've got the cam covers off mine so if you still want a picture of the inside let me know and I'll post it (I meant to do it at the weekend but forgot Embarassed

). Although if the bolt is spinning Zp's advice to just rip it off sounds wise.

i think you have to undo the top mount aswell, if im right? the engine wont drop out,as its sitting on the crossmember

If I can't get the cam cover out by twisting it then I'll try undoing the top engine mount too.

have you undone the engine stabilizer, to allow side ways movement?
yer a pic would be good, just to see how wide the plastic surrounding the nut is, i'll either cut around that or try to prize it off.

i dont think its a torq bolt btw its a spline one, halfords sell a set for 20 quid, i know cos i bought the set.

I haven't undone the engine stabilizer so I'll try that too.

I did buy the T55 Torq bit on Saturday and it does seem to fit the head bolt though so I think I'm okay there.

Don't even wanna think about trying to put the thing back together, amazingly I reckon that could be even worse! Rolling Eyes

Sorry to say but stedee is right, it's not a torx bit. The correct bit is a M12 which has 12 splines on it as opposed to a torx which only has 6. The T55 does fit as you have found out but with the forces involved you could damage the head bolts or snap the torx bit damaging yourself.
I'll stick on a pic of what i mean when photobucket is up again.

Sheet, you guys know your stuff!

I don't wanna risk rounding the head bolts so I'll get this M12 bit - thanks. I did see the Alfa tool in Big Al's thread but someone else said ordering and delivery could take forever. Do you know where I might get this from reasonably quickly?

.i had no trouble taking off and putting on the heads.but i mite just have been lucky

tool separately there getting
back to me"

I've got an M12 bit now and hopefully I'll get to try it this weekend.

BigAl - That head bolt kit sounds tops! Hopefully I won't need it now but if I do I'll come back to you (or if it's no trouble please could you let me have the garage's details anyway - they sound like they might be useful for all sorts).
