I,m in the process of re-comissioning a 1.7 8v for my kit car, its running a pair of twin 40 dellortos, and the choke cable is broken between the two carbs……I bought just the engine, so I'm not familiar with the alfa-33 layout…….what does the choke cable normally look like……..is it 1 continous piece of inner cable that gos from both carbs to the adjusting knob in the dashboard?.......or is it supposed to be split where the adjusting cable joins the first carburettor?......do I need a genuine alfa cable, or could I bodge together something using one of those universal choke cables?

There's usually a choke cable to one of the carbs and a bar linking the two carbs. Confused

Er, I think.

Hi

The choke cable is one long cable. It goes (from memory) from the choke lever to the n/s carb (ie, water pump side of the engine) then round the front of the engine to the o/s carb.

They are normally fairly useless. They have a habit of sticking on so often people leave on disconnected (ie, the n/s one). But to be honest they are not really needed. They are accelerator pump carbs so blipping the throttle squirts a load of extra fuel into the inlets. It is easy to start them from cold just doing this, and easy to keep them running the same way.

All the best

Keith

Oops. Sorry I got my chokes and throttles mixed up.

Yeah a lot of people say not to use the choke at all.

Very Happy I remember my 8v carbs and miss it quite a lot Sad
Tha manual says for cold starting to press the clutch pedal in, press the throttle pedal 1 1/2 times and start the engine. I used to do this on my old 8v and it started first time everytime, apart from when my carbs needed tuning, balancing or cleaning. I to disconnected the choke cable and never used it.

Inner is one piece, outer is two piece. Mine has been stuck ever since I got the car. Alfa only advise using it for a very short period but it can be handy to keep the motor running while you shut the gates on an icy morning. Otherwise don't worry about it
