'93 1.7 16v:
Is the thermostate housing the thing almost immediately behind the power steering pump?
Cheers

Hi, yes and needs removal of the intake manifold to gain proper access at it. Note that it shall be renewed as a whole unit as the thermostat and housing aren't sold separately. Also note that most rubber hoses that connect to the thermostat will need replacement as well.
Regards,

OK, further to this what do people's catalysed 16v 1.7s run at?
Assuming the gauge is accurate mine seems to run at about 70C, creeping close to but never exceed 80C if it is stationary.
Apparently Paul H.'s girlfriend's also runs at this sort of temperature. This seems a bit on the cool side but maybe it's how it should be! _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |

I wouldn't entirely trust the gauges, try a thermo probe in the rad, bet the reading would be more to 80-85c! , but as long as the red warning light is off then you need not worry. _________________ PHAT 33 |

Granted, dashboard gauges are notoriously poor.
I do have a multimeter with thermo probe so I'll try that _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |

It sounds normal to me.
In my experience if it gets past half-way on the dial it's working ok. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

But it isn't, it is normally one division before half way, just creeping up to half way when queueing.
An engine running too cold will be down on power and dirty it's oil very quickly. _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |

In that case then yes it may be sticking open.
I've changed the thermostat on my 1.3 i.e. without removing the inlet manifold. Just the bonnet. I didn't change any hoses either. It's been fine since. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Best way to know if a thermostat is open is if engine temperature drops substantially from normal running temperature on a decent 5th gear run. This becomes more noticeable as the weather gets colder and your heater loses ability to work. (if it worked before!) _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

70 is half way on my dials?
Anyhow, Mine (1.7 16v) runs at 70 and that's with a new thermostat so I doubt you have anything to worry about. Before I changed it it was sitting at 50ish (stuck open) |

Do you see jump in temp reading when you turn ON lights ie low beams.
16v Normal operating temp is 85+ on open roads in cold it is ok to have 80. Below that can be bit problematic if we talk about regular 33 with its regular cooling.
In case temp gauge isn't correct you might want to clean main ground point on starter. L plate with 2 screws and 3-4 ground wires harneses on each. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

Thanks for your input everyone.
I'll measure the temperature at the weekend and also clean up the earth points.
I might also take it for a drive with the rad partially blocked off to see what happens.
It just feels like a car that's not quite up to temperature.
That said it has been underused for the last few years and is running noticeably better since a nice long run down to Paul H.'s at the weekend. _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |
