Hi,

Wonder if any one can help, just bought a 1500 boxer engine to use in a project, mainly cause I just love the sound of these engines, however need to mate it to some kind of rear wheel drive gearbox. Anyone done this before and any sugestions as to what best to use would be appreciated. Also any mating bits or conversion bits anyone knows of. My friend has a boxer powered Imp but he used a beetle box as engine is in rear of car. Car my engine came out of was a four wheel drive but don't think this box would help because of power percentage split.

There are adapter plates available for beetle boxes but I haven't heard of any other ones available.

The beele boxes are 4 speed and the ratios aren't particulary good either.

There are other guys on the forum who are Kit car aficionados who will be better placed to give you advice.

I did see, on Top Gear, a skoda nut, who had the sense to drop a 16V boxer into his skoda.

It did fit, and work, but i don't know whether he used the skoda box, or the alfa. The skoda box was designed to handle a 70 bhp engine, so putting a 137bhp alfa lump through it may not be very clever.

I think the beetle option is the most common solution to kit-car-boxer-fitting.

There was a guy who was fitting a boxer in a replica car he was building. see quote:

My step father and i put a 12a rotary in a beetle. adapter plate bolted onto vw box bell housing and on went the 12a. I don't remember where the adapter plate came from, but wasn't expensive or very complicated.
weird sounding bug! dumb ass project. long time ago now.

What's the project Des? Will it be rear engined (ie spin the engine and gearbox around and drive the rear wheels) or mid engined (ie engine just ahead of gearbox driving the rear axle). Either the beetle or alfa gearbox will do although the latter would be better. Depends on what brakes and axles you are using. Although the inner part of the alfa axle can be mated with the outer part of another, eg beetle (if done properly)

Having said that, I can't quite understand your post, but are you planning rear wheel drive while still using the engine in the front? Need to know more!

Sorry guys been on hoiday so did not have chance to see your replies until now.
Engine will be in front of car driving rear wheels. Have been back to place where I bought engine to look at four wheel drive gearbox, this is in a C reg 33 selectable four wheel drive. still think I may be able to use this but not sure how to get just rear wheel drive from it. The yard does not want so much money for the box so I may buy and take a chance that I can use. If not I will just sell it off on Ebay, someone may be searching for one of these.

Not sure if the selectable 4wd box would take the strain of passing all the torque through to the rear wheels
